M-Audio Studiophile BX5?

hey guys, been a while since ive posted here, how's everything been?

im wondering if anyone here has had any experience with the M-Audio BX5 monitors, from the reviews ive seen on MF and the price, they seem like a good deal. they claim to have a 56hz-20khz frequency response, which seems like it doesnt extend enough into the bass end (am i right?), but considering the fact that similarly priced monitors dont even advertise the frequency response, i assume its no better. I've considered maybe if i feel that it REALLY lacks bass down the line, a subwoofer would be an option, though i believe i remember some reliable people on this forum speaking against the use of a Subwoofer while monitoring.
so whats the thought on these?
any response, as always would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I am not into the subwoofer idea unless you are monitoring music that is being produced for system with subs, such as film scores. Otherwise make damn sure you set it up properly so as not to skew your monitoring perception.

I have the BX8's with the M-Audio subs and I love it! Yes, even the BX8's lack bass. That is the only thing I do not like about M-Audio's monitors. Then again, I'm no expert and haven't listen to tons of brands of monitors out there. My personal choice is to have a sub woofer. Since M-Audio doesn't have bass, I believe you need something to be able to judge it. But I totally agree with dB that you have to make damn sure you set it up properly. I went through mixing and then mastered my music just to go in my car and hear that the bass was wayyyyy off. It sounded great in the monitor though. So, you basically have to find that volume level that you can tell the bass/kick is too loud or too soft, too boomy or sounds like it's hitting a bag. That's very important.

Hi Dan,

I have the BX5's and love them. You have to learn how to compensate the lack of Sub frequencies but if your music is not hard on these frequencies they'll do fine.
The music I produce is rock and rock pop and I have no complaints.
I use to have the BX8's and I like the BX5's better because everything is more tight and under control.

Hope this help.

I'am not saying that the BX5's are better than the BX8's. I loved the BX8's but in my room (11.5 x 13) they sounded a little over-powering and the BX5's are more controlled.

Dan, I bought the BX8's a couple of months ago and I love them. You are right, that they do lack the bass response without the subwoofer, but Db Masters is right...it's better a lot of times to mix without the subwoofer. It tends to skew the mix. When mixing you want a flat response from your monitors. When mixing with my "old" monitors (which had full thick bass response) I always had to make numerous trips back and forth from the car to the studio because it "sounded" great through the monitors during mixing, but when I'd get it into the car it always sounded terrible. Since I've begun mixing with the BX8 monitors (yes, they're flat), but I've pretty much nailed my mixes on the first go around. I get to the car, pop in the Cd and it sounds spot on. You'll save a lot of time and energy mixing with flat monitors, and will get a better mix that way. A subwoofer is cool for playbacks "after" you mix. Get the BX8's...you'll have them for life. M-Audio makes great gear for home/studio recording.

just a good guesser

A bigger, though underestimated, part of buying monitors is getting to know them...if you know they are weak in the bass end (or your room is or whatever) you learn to compensate for it...just keep that in mind. While you do want good one's, whatever you do have, get to know them...

well, i went and bought them yesterday, and compared to the 3 different pairs of computer speakers ive been monitoring with, i see no lack of bass. i listened to a few mixes i had basicly thought were finished, and wow, its an unbelievable difference in the frequency response, they sound like completely different mixes through these. yeah... those songs were definitely not finished. thanks all for the advice.
