G4 should I upgrade to G5 or stay w/ what I have - PLEASE HELP

Hi,

I am new to home studio recording. This is what I do have: Mac G4, a very old Audiowerks 8 sound card, Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro mixer, monitor speakers and an old version of Logic that I have never used b/c I could not understand how to use it!

A computer friend told me that I should upgrade to a G5 because my porcessor was too slow.

I was thinking of doing this: Purchasing Tracktion because it sounds user friendly. I basically want to record vocals and guitar. I was also going to purchas a firewire box and an inexpensive condensor mic.

Do I really need to upgrade to a G5 or will my old G4 have enough power to do what I need to do?

Also if you have any suggestions on software, please feel free to comment. I was thinking pro tools but I do not want something too complicated and pricey because I am such the newbe.

Thanks for any feedback

Welcome to HRC.

You don't need to upgrade, and if you want to do that simple of a task, just vox and guitar, doesn't Mac come with Garage Band bundled with it? Lots of people very successfully use Garage Band to make some great recordings.

Failing that, Tracktion is a great application. Very easy to use and should be fine on a G4, if anything I would suggest making sure you have lots of RAM as well.

Thanks so much for the reply!!! I bought my G4 appx 5 years ago so I do not have that bundle. However a friend is going to give me Tiger, so purhaps Tiger has it.

What do you think about the M-Audio FireWire Audiophile and the MXL 992/992 Studio Package mic set?

Thanks again!
