Edirol UA-25

I'm considering getting this USB interface because:
1. Overcomes the latency I get with my SoundBlaster
2. Has preamps which are presumably better than my little Behringer mx602 preamps (is this true?)
3. Has some basic compression
4. Has MIDI in/out for playing DXi/VSTi
5. Has better AD converters than the Soundblaster

However, I think the unit is USB1 - is this something that I should be concerned about? I only ever record 1-2 audio inputs at once.

Thanks
Andrew

I know nothing about this unit but usb 1 was used
in multimedia cards where the 10-20ms latency
doesn't matter...
The usb 2.0 interface has "zero" latency(3-7ms)but it "needs" some cpu power...
You should try one of those firewire options
if you need an external device...
("zero"latency-less cpu power needed)

OMG, I had no idea this post slipped completely thru the cracks and didn't get answered.

My apologies to the poster.

It's doubtful that the Edirol would have any better pres than your Behringer, however, it is likely a bit better latency than any Sound Blaster as well as better D/A convertors, but probably not much. Edirol, as a whole, makes very low end gear in the semi-pro realm, whereas SB makes hi-end gear in the consumer market...it's a wash, the difference will likely be more in the quality of the driver and the available driver standards moreso than any of the hardware quality.

In my opinion.

Thanks for getting back to this one. I thought I must of had a bad dose of B.O. the day I posted it or something!

mmm.... I had decided that I would buy the unit until dB posted. What about the Edirol firewire units (eg FA66)or are the same issues/concerns about preamps and AD converters still hold?

Any other brands of USB/FIrewire I should be looking at? Maybe I should just get a good PCI card (ESI Juli@ or M-audio audiophile). AS an aside, here in Australia they want over AU$400 for an audiophile! That's about US$300. I think I'll be looking online in the US!

Thanks
Andrew
