SM58 --> SM57

A simple (stupid) question: exactly how do you unscrew the grille on a sm58 to turn it into a sm57? I don't want to accidently break it.

if you mean make it look the same all you do is unscrew the metal mesh head from the body of the microphone, and it will look similar. now note my wording, LOOK similar. 58's and 57's have different frequency responses and somewhat different polar patterns, so using a 58 will not be the same as using a 57. however, you can use them in the same manner so go for it and see what happens. good hunting!

Whilst I concur the 58 and 57 do have different responses, I was led to believe by many folks that the differences are very minor. The lack of the proximity effect on the 57 and the difference in the mid-high freq response/range is apparently the main difference. I believe that wis on the Shure website however, I dont really know for sure.

That said, I tried it a few times. I took of the grille, fire the mic in front of my Marshall and also acoustic and fooled most folks into thinkin it was a 57...but, as AD says - it is NOT the same. However, to my lugs, there was little difference.

best thing to do is just try it bud..if it sounds good for ya, then it is good.

Good luck anyways...

hold mic body with left hand, grab the round mesh 'head', twist to the left.

...and if you hear a "pssst". Take another look and make sure you haven't grabbed the last brewskie.

Seriously though, I have a couple of SM58 knockoffs and I removed the grill and found that they do work better for me as overheads. The inside of the grills on my mics are lined with foam and appeared to reduce the highs a bit.

I don't know if the same holds true for Shure mics.

They're pretty similar, the graph on the 58 is with the windshield on, which obviously the 57 doesn't have. It's not entirely the same mic, but really pretty close.

57s the stuff on everything. our newest recording was done completley with 57's and it came out pretty kickin. (purevolume.com/theautumndesign) i even tried them out on all the drums and they worked wonders. vocals, not so much but still a decent sound. i recommend them for EVERYthing. shure is the way to go.
