VS1680 Multitracker and SONAR

Now I know a lot of people here use Sonar and I think one or two use a Roland VS aswell so in my quest for creating a better set up I was looking into the sonar side of things and discovered that you can interface the roland VS with the software.

Now the question is in two parts

1. What are the benefits of this.

2. How easy is it to do and in what style of configuration do you use it.

i've got a 1680 and run sonar....

i was wantin' to try something with the SCUSI (sp?) port gooin' to the computer, but had no luck....i ended up usin' the spdif out from the 1680 gooin' to my soundcard....thing is, i could only transfer two tracks of audio at a time...

i do know that roland and cakewalk have struck some kinda partnership, so i bet it's only a matter of time b4 we see some kinda roland interface bundled with cakewalk software. or better yet, how bout a 2480 that uses Sonar internally!!! that'd be shaweet!!

ummm that's all i got ta say about that

peace

now if only i had th money for a 2480 that would be nice and the thought of having an intergrated program in it would certainly make me DROOOOOOOOLLLLL

I've been doing the two tracks thing into CEP and it's ok but as u know very time consuming.

what did you try with the SCSI port. Did you have a scsi card in the pc aswell?

haha i thought i could hook it up to my printer port!!! WRONG!!

that's as far as i got...

yeah the two tracks at a time sucks, i once recorded my father's band practice which was about an hour and a half long....had 6 tracks total, so it took f...o...r....e...v...e...r.

"printer port!!! WRONG!!/"

Easy mistake I assumed the same until my brother explained why he had never done it b4. The problem I have is I only have 1 pci slot left on my pc so if i buy a scsi card i will have to look at going usb for the sound card which I don't want.

My band did 3 songs for a demo and it really was a pain loading all of it one by one into the pc. Now this has just raised an issue for me so I have a question. when you transfer your tracks to the pc do you keep them as a mono track and work on that or do you convert it into a stereo track straightaway.

i do two monos paned hard left and right, then set up two seperate channels in my DAW one to record each side (SB card, inputs Left and Right)....also set all faders to unity (then i got to thinkin' it might be better to get them as hot as possible since you're reconverting, but my SB card had an 1/8" TS digital (SPDIF) input..so i left mine at unity.

cheers!

This is bassically (pun intended) what I did, but the difference being that I reduced the ATT on the VS cause otherise the signal was way toooooo hottttt!!! (what did I do wrong for future reference) Perhaps this is the reason for not geting the general sound I want ( or it could always be the crappy recording LOL)

haha sounds like you did what i did....i forgot to say, my mixer was running at +4 db output, and my line in on my crappy Sound blaster was at -10, i just turned my mixer mains to -10 and left the channel at unity and problem solved (er atleast compensated for)

mixer = 1680

i also had a tascam DM-1000 (i think) it was a fairly cheap digital mixer (20bit) but i had to set the faders on both to -10

DOH!! i did NOT mean BOTH as in the 1680 gooin' into the mixer....it was an either/or for me

i quit using the 1680 as my "extended soundcard" when i got the seperate digital mixer.

jeebs my head hurts now

go and have a lay don in a darkened room, you've deserved it.

The reason I am using the VS is due to the recording / practise room is located in an outbuilding and I suppose I could put the PC in when required but too much hassle. SO will carry on the VS for the momement. But I dream of a sound card ith 10ins so I can dump a whole lot more into the PC in one go.
