Hey all my band Anomie just finished recording our latest song and its up on the net now, but im looking for some feedback of any kind as to how it could sound better. i think the bass and bass drum are overlapping poorly, and the bass might need some high end boost. really im just looking to get a more professional sound to the mix, so any comments that could help are incredibly appreciated. and the vocals are just for temporary while our new singer gets his sh** together, so try to ignore them. purevolume.com/anomie (its the one titled *newsong*) thanks a lot

Bung a link in mate and we'll give it a listen!

Even www.purevolume.com/anomie didn't work for me.

Mind you, perhaps the server was down when i tried.

crappy computer speakers...

i'm assuming you're mixing on your fostex, so i'm gonna approach this a bit differently.

this is a big job for your eq!
starting on the low end, on the kick, i'd roll off everything lower than 60hz, and cut around 200hz to make room for the bass guitar. now on bass you wanna roll off everything below 80-100 (to make room for the kick) and cut around 300hz to clear up the mudd and add clarity to the guitars. i'm hearing a boost in the mids of the guitars (could be my small spkrs) but to me they're "ringing" at around 2k, try backin' off this area so the vox have room. also roll off them at 200hz or so.....if you can i'd compress the kick and snare (seperately) to give them more evenness. also one thing i learned is to cut the gain to about 10 0'clock or less when tracking distorted guitars, oversaturation kills clarity, and no eq can fix it (listen to "police state" in my profile and you'll hear, cuz i made the same mistake) i now have zero definition...
you can get away with a slight boost on the vocals at around 3-4k for some more clarity, and i'd boost the drum overheads with a shelf at around 5k. a tad more compression on the vox will bring them more up front. oh speakin' of depth, ya might wanna experament with some reverb on the drums to push them back some (sometimes just some on the kick and snare is enough)

good overall song, i like the structure alot (i'm gettin' way tired of verse, chorus, verse chorus) and the backup vocals add excelent feel.

peace

Hey Autumn. Nice song. I like the main riff.

Song: Overall, nice. Well-constructed and moving. Not bad at all. Really no complaints in it's context.

Recording: I have never recorded a rock-n-roll band before (I will be working with a band this summer though!), so I don't know all the difficulties that go along with recording a full band, but it sounds like you track each instrument separately...if so, here are some suggestions.

Play around with the pan on each instrument. The drums are centered and the toms are panned out...keep those the way they are! But maybe pan the lead guitar riff to the right and the rythmn guitar to the left. The bass is fine where it is. The vocals are okay also. Just mainly the two guitar parts need to be pushed apart to give the song a bigger sound.

I also noticed that the tail of the song at the very end it cut off. Try letting it go all the way till there is no sound left. A good way to edit this is to fade it out where you have it cut off and fade it out in a track with high reverb.

Other than that, good song! Keep writing!

thanx a lot guys, i worked with the bass rolloff a little (i wish the fostex had parametric control on the lows, grrrrr) and its seeming to fit a little better. a little high end boost helped too (gets kinda lost with the geetars but it works pretty cool). we're trying out a new singer this weekend and hopefully a re-worked version with him will be out soon, (with the addition of your comments too of course.) thanks again for the input, made my week!
