Simple recording.

As a habit my band tries to record every practice. Obviosly not studio quality stuff but mostly to keep track of things and capture jams and whatnot. We used to use an apple laptop for our recording purposes but lately we have been using one channel of a four track recorder.

My question attatched to this would be ways to improve sound quality a tad. The Zoom msr-4b (the 4track we use) has the capacity to record two mics at a time, I was thinking of using that feature, but also maybe upgrading mics? we are using old old old shure vocal/instrument mics.

Any suggestions for room recording of this type?

yes, I would surely use both channels, have them in opposite corners of the room, or perhaps run vocals directly into one channel, as that is often the toughest instrument to get in that situation...

Ya I second dB with that. Have your vocalist sing into one mic and then use the other mic to pic up all the other instruments. Also, be sure to arange your amps and such so that its balanced out. And If you were gonna upgrade mics, go with a small diaphram condensor. I recomend my AudioTechnica Midnight Blue series 4k. It was $100 for one (keep your vocal mic if your gonna go with dB's idea), and it runs on batteries (otherwise you would need to have phantom power, which im pretty sure your recorder doesn't have).

Good Luck.

It says in your profile you have access to a 12 channel mixer. Plug everything in and run the master stereo outs to your Zoom. unless youve already thought of that, and then i'd agree with dB and josh over there.
