Peavey or Alto?

First of all, I am new to recording and just doing it for personal use. I have been plugging my guitar\mic into the single input of my soundcard and recording single tracks. I do not plan to do anything serious but just experimenting. I wanted to get a small inexpensive mixer and have narrowed my choice down to the Peavey PV6 (www.peavey.com/products/b.../1/PV%AE+6.cfm) and Alto AMX-100 without digital effects (www.altoproaudio.com/html/mixers.php). I know these are bottom of the barrell models but that is what I want.

Could someone give me their opinion on each of these and why they would choose one over the other.

Thanks for your anticipated help

First and formost, welcome to HRC!

Second, I've looked under the barrel for some of my stuff, we've all been there.

Now, on to my meager review:

I just looked at both, the seem pretty similar function wise, i'd probably lean towards the alto, by their write-up, plus I know a band that uses a 16 or 18 channel board for they're live show and the SE is pretty happy with it. But, peavey has been known for decades for sound engineering, and it seems they'be been getting a little better rep as they go along.

Just to keep you thinking, i did a look at two other options, the behringer ub1002 is basically the same thing for less than the peavey, and then I looked up the yamaha mg10/2. It's got 4 mic inputs instead of 2, and has channel inserts on two of the channels (none of the others have inserts listed). Those two options alone sets it way above the other three options. You may think this is unnecessary for a small operation, but if you enjoy it and do nice stuff, you'll want to expand pretty quick, and inputs & inserts will come in handy. The MG is less $ than the peavey, too. I didn't get the price on the alto.

Here's the linky for the alto board. It didn't convey from their site correctly.

web-related content follows:

hey dan, i see the above linky doesn't being the frames along. very good point indeed.

the first link doesn't even attach to the correct page, the second one omits the frames.

risky business indeed.

frames suck, I've said it before, I'll likely say it again...frames are the devil.

Tappy, welcome to HRC.

Honestly if your looking for a lower priced small mixer, and are not going to do any serious mixing. I woul definately recomend the Behringer ub1002 as pjk stated. They build some great stuff for a very moderate price. I as well as many other here have been using their gear for years and have not had a lick of trouble.
