Interface advice, anyone?

After much research and brickwall contact at speed, I've narrowed my choices to:

Echo Layla 3G
EMU 1820M
M-Audio 1814

I wish I had more to spend, but I don't. I've got Windows 98se & Win2K, both "dedicated" boxes with all the "latest" updates. AMD 1.4, Sis 735 chipset. 40g & 60g 7200 HDs. I don't want to pop for WinXP until I do a new box (next year?). I want ADAT, usable with 8+ analog inputs. Onboard pre-amps are not necessary. I'd like a firewire interface for the "portability" (future laptop?), but I'm seeing a lot of problems with the firewire interfaces "disappearing" in the middle of a session. What CPU/motherboard is anyone using when they run into trouble? The Echo & EMU are both PCI-based, no advantage to either, it seems. The EMU "might" have better ADACs? Both seem to have problems with certain hardware combinations. What CPU/motherboard is anyone using that runs into trouble? I'll most likely end up with the audio interface & computer mounted in a rack, with an UPS and mixer, so, really, firewire isn't "important". I do like the specs on the new Echo AudioFire12, but no ADAT light pipe? Appears to use WinXP, and most likely over my budget, like the Presonus & RME are.

Wow, those get involved! Lots of animosity zapping around in that one board! Reminds me of the Guillemot ISIS Studio message boards, when they used to "support" that card. I still have my ISIS, and it works "fine". It's taken a while to get used to its shortcomings, & I know what I can and cannot (especially that) do with it. Most of the ISIS shortcomings were hardware compatibility issues. It especially did not like VIA chipsets on the motherboard, and definitely did not play friendly with other PCI cards, especially other soundcards. Overclocking the bus is a definite no-no. But very few folks actually get down to the nutz & boltz and figure out what causes the problems with their hardware... and most companies don't want to admit a problem with... (pick your piece)

Dude you are so right about the whole challange!

M-audio seems to be staying on top of things a little better than E-mu per my humble opinion. And I truely mean MHO. They all are having issues with the constant changes to operating systems.

I want... I want... I want... But I can't afford to spend bux on an interface, to find it doesn't work with what I've got, then discover I have to spend bux on a system upgrade, then to discover I have to upgrade my OS, to discover that my interface is now obsolete. Been there before (like right now).
