Anyone transferred ADAT to computer?

I'm back to a similar question I asked earlier, only now, I'm to the hardware questions: If you've transferred ADAT (specifically Alesis 8-track) to your computer, what hardware did you use? Did you like using it, was it difficult to set-up, configure, etc.? Were the results satisfactory? What kind of "load" does the computer have to handle (similar to 8 tracks of analog?)? Is it just as easy to convert the ADAT to 8 tracks of analog and come into an 8-track digital interface (48hHz-20 to Analog to 48kHz-16)? I'm using Cool Edit on an AMD 1.4gHz w/2 7200 rpm HD, 512meg mem. We don't really want to spend money on dying technology (ADAT), but it will be part of ONE future recording project. I've been thinking of "upgrading" my interface to something that has ADAT light pipe inputs... any suggestions there?
