trouble with MOTU 828 II

Hi all,

Trying to run Cubase SX3 with MOTU 828 MkII. First I only had one problem: the mic guitar input signal never appeared in the audio input channel. I tried every possible preference window and everything I and two computer-savvy (more than myself) friends could think of. Zip!
Today after viewing some cool drummer videos in Quick Time (don't open in Win Media nor RealOne) some settings must have changed. Cubase doesn't load/recognize MOTU 828 II at all. Now in each dialog box I only have the (weak and ultra high latency) internal Realtek soundcard available, MOTU 828II dissappeared. Reason 2.5 - when I open it alone - still runs fine and fast as ever with the MOTU 828 II over the studio monitor speaker system, meaning the MOTU is still communicating with Win XP.

Should I uninstall QuickTime? Anyone had any similar experiences?

Thanks a LOT for any help!

When you write "mic guitar input", are you refering to the 2 inputs for XLR or TRS to the left of the box? And, when you say "never", do you mean since day one when you 1st installed it, it's never appeared? What do you mean by the audio input channel? In Cubase, or at the box? Have you tried the Windows Sound Recorder? If you've never gotten a signal, do you have a defective unit? Are you sure it's not muted somewhere in the software settings, either in the interface or Cubase?

Old versions of Quick Time used to hijack your computer and overwrite all your media file's associations. Maybe that happened, or just coincidence. Have you tried to un-install and then re-install Cubase or the Motu? Have you recently updated Windows? Do you practice safe-surfing? etc.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Fortunately I solved all problems. Everything running fine now.
I uninstalled Quicktime (Version 6.x) and re- installed it not clicking on the "make default player" box. That is the hijack part.
A friend of mine found the hidden place in the devices menu where one can choose the MOTU 828 II. The VST input menu looks a bit different now on Cubase SX3, that caused some confusion. The incoming signal is not present on the input channel, only on the input bus which has to be defined in the input sub menu. The recorded signal will appear on the VU display of the input channel when played back.

The two inputs (jack/LXR) on the left side of the MOTU front panel are labelled mic/guitar input and appear somewhere down the list. I have always chosen (wrongly) 1 and 2 that's why I never got any input signal, not even into the input bus.

Thought I'd share my adventures... so far.
