gain staging in sonar

well, i've got a pretty good and generic drum mix up and i was noticing in 'track view' the peak levels were different than the ones in 'mixer view', this got me thinkin'.....those in track view are showing the levels of the raw tracks pre-fx and fader...i've never used the trim at the very top of the channel strip in sonar and now i think i'm gonna hafta reset ALL of my compressor and eq settings!! i'm thinkin' i can use that trim to get every track up to say -2db before hittin' the eq, then depending on my eq settings i can boost/cut to i have optimal gain gooin' into the compressor (which will raise my threshold settings from about -12 to where they should be, say -5 or so....i've taken great care in the rest of the chain makin' sure not to ever overload the compressor and other effects, but now i'm gonna hafta scrap those settings if i use the trim.....anyone fimillar with what i'm talkin' about? i know it's not gonna make a HUGE difference in overall sound, but i've found when you put alot of care and thought into gain staging, it can make the difference between a mediocre sound and a brilliant mix....any thoughts?

wow i also noticed that both the volume and trim settings in track view have nothing to do with the volume fader and trim in mixer view...anyone know why that is? and what's the best way to use them?

You've given me a lot to think about. I never use the mixer view, finding all I need in the track view. But if you're saying that they behave very differently then I might have to look into this further.

Are you sure the track meters are pre-fader and pre-FX; I'm not at home right now, so I can't check - but that doesn't sound familiar to me. Perhaps there is a setting somewhere which allows you to have it work one way or another, and you and I simply have different settings...?

Just on the subject of the trim control, I find it a useful tool if I have employed a track envelope for the volume; to make quick overall adjustments I can adjust the trim instead of altering or moving the entire envelope.
