i'll be trackin' vocals and i have acess to two different large diaphragm condensors to choose from, one is an AKG C4000, and i'm not quite sure what the other one is, i wanna record a bit of both at the same time with the singer to get a feel for which one works better with his voice....here's the thing, i'm borrowing a supersweet pre from a friend (donno what kind yet though) and i know that mikes respond differently to different pre's, should i...

A: test each mic with the outboard pre seperately? (which means more setup and soundcheck time, not too biga deal though)

or

B: set both mikes side by side and plug 'em right into the Roland 2480 that we're trackin' on
in one take?

whatch'all think?

thanks

If you plan on using the pre-amp, I'd say do the a/b test with each mic and the pre-amp in the chain. if you not going to use the pre amp, just go into the 2480.

oh i'm definately trackn' with an outboard pre, but i'm afraid the settings will be off a bit due to setup/teardown, i was thinkin' i get a more "scientific" a/b with both mikes gooin' through the same pres (2480) trackin' at the same time with the same program material.....but i think you're right if i'm gonna use the pre, then i need to here each mic sounds with that pre....

It's funny , you can do an /ab with both mic's plugged in to the 2480 and see how they sound that way, but you could have drastic differences with the other pre. Some mic's and pre's just are made for each other (or so it seems).

it'd be funny if the 2480 sounded better!

i've seen (heard) stranger things, I've used a cheap MXL mic over a Numan because it worked with the vocalist .
