When you recorded the track "lights", what were you using for mics for the drums?

haha two 57's overhead and a sure PG58 flopping around inside the kick....all of it was recorded in a garrage durrin' band practice, fyi i used pg-48's on the guitar cabs, bass was direct and vox were direct, all recorded into a Roland vs-1680 (only two mic pre's on that mofo) i had to use xlr to 1/4" adaptors for the guitar and kick mics! lol very informal and unprofessional, but i wanted to show them what i could do with minimal gear, after they heard it, i got hired to do their EP...it's not a bad sound for the conditions though.

I cant remember the yahoo thing... that was a complete pain in the butt anyway.

also, i remember your story about how you recorded that band... I was impressed by the way the drums sounded. I am currently in the market for a set of mics for recording drums, but i am on a bit of a budget as well. I will be using an 8" MB Quart speaker for the bass... I tried that about a week ago, and I am quite impressed with how it sounded. Now I just need some mics for the rest of the kit.

Thanks.

word up, on their EP i'm using a pair of Samson C02's and have got really nice results from them, i was gonna use a pair of AKG C1000's overhead but i did some research and i read alotta bad things about them so i went with the Samson's they're pretty affordable too, and come in a nice case when you get a matched pair...

danamusic.com but you have to be patient as they are all reviewed before being posted... it usually takes about 2 days.

Hey, how do you think it would sound if I used a Nady DMK5 mic kit and 2 SM57's for overheads?

yeah tha'd work, but you really wanna try to get some small diaphragm condensors to capture the crispness of the cymbals...57's just don't have the sparkle....but hey if you like the sound, screw the rules!

hmm perhaps I need to be educated on the difference in mics. This will be my first time of micing a drum kit (i mean, other than my old AKG mic and 2 MB Quarts) and I want to get this right.

So, obviously, the main purpose of overheads is to mic the cymbals, right? or no?

I want this to sound as close to "professional" as I can get, and for the most part, im mic-illiterate.

oh, also should have mentioned... it is far from critical, and definitly not a deciding factor, but it would be really nice if I ended up with a mic capable of recording an acoustic guitar as well.

if you want a pro sound then that pretty much forces you to use two matching small diaphragm condensors overhead, 57 on the snare, and large diaphragm dynamic inside the kick, clip-on tom mics are optional....

the overhead mics have different purposes for different sounds, like in jazz they're there to capture the natural sound of the whole kit, but in pop/rock they're basically for cymbals (keep in mind every drum bleeds into every mic)

so you really think the samson c02s are going to be the best way to go? I play pretty much the same music as the group you recorded... only without the distorted screaming. come to think of it, nothing I record ever has vocals.

oh, also, the two overhead mics... where should they be pointed? I rememebr reading an article that said pointing them at the ground would not give you the best sound.

ummm are you damn sure you can get that kit for that price?? we've got that same exact kit and the LIST price is $800 bucks which means we (a music store) paid roughly 400....if you can snag that kit for that price, i'd jump on it!
