Just got back from NAMM. Did anyone else make it? It was pretty cool to see all the new gear. It was very informative to auditon many mics in a row just by pushing a button. There's a few pics of the NAMM show in my scrap book on my site for those interested.

Very cool, I wish I could have made it this year, I was invited to a couple of parties from Mackie and NI, but I couldn't go :-(

I think we're gonna have to find the time to go to the summer NAMM show or at least next winters show.

Sounds like a good time!

Did anything strike your fancy in particular? I remember you are a big fan of micing, what did you hear that stood out?

Hey walt, It was a rare opportunity to audition mics side by side at a click of a button. I got to try the M149 neuman which was nice. 4,000 dollars of nice? Probably not. The TLM 103 was good as well.

The thing that stood out to me were these cheap MXL mics. I like their new tube mic the best (around the $300 mark) These mics are very good values and compare favorably to more expensive mics I feel. Making firm determinations in that noisey enviroment was difficult, But I want to audition more MXL in my studio to be sure. There's pics of namm on my site.

From what I heard of the Manley Langevin DVC Combo? I would like to hear more, and compare it to the Mackie Onyx pres. I'm getting ready to produce my next CD, and if there is a genuine fidelity difference in this higher end gear, it will find a home in my studio. I'm also going to audition some external A/D, D/A conversion as well.

I agree with the A/D, D/A conversion. I have been considering that to a degree myself, although the converters in the HD24 have done a nice job so far for me. At some point I would like to get away from the board altogether relitive to the recording input chain and just use the board or maybe even line mixer for monitoring purposes.

You are not the only one talking about the MXL's. I am hearing a lot of favorable chatter. I picked up a set of 603 magomies just in a pinch and for overheads on a kit they found a home. I was very supprised.

One of my problems with pre's is the bulk. I do a lot of on site work with up to 24 channels running mics with the big band. I need pre's that take up as little space as possible. Having said that, the pre's I am using in my board are good enough until the band gets the performance issues streightened away enough to consider doing any real fine recording.

I've heard even picky pros find the factory A/D in the HD24 acceptable. Some still upgrade (Burr&Brown I think). The Masterlink is also said to have decent conversion.

I think for on location recording the pres on a good compact mixer would be fine. I've got a friend that bought a Mackie Onyx 1640 and he likes the pres on it better than his $500 stand alone pre. Take it for what it's worth.

In all honesty, thanks for the aformation. I know I was delighted at the sound from the first time I used the unit. Good to hear others agree that have been exposed to more gear.

And I definately agree with the 'take it for what it's worth' perspective. So much is about the 'beholders ear'; and I like that; it speaks to the art.

Thanks for the chat. You could yet become HRC's roving reporter!
