Is there a place to compare ratings/cost for good audio recording cards? Or can you recommend one (other then M-Audio which doesnt work on my computer).
I have a SB LIve 16bit now. Will I really ear a big difference in my recordings if I go 24bit? Isnt a CD at 16bit anyway?
thanks for any thoughts

Jan 06, 2005 07:34 pm CD is 16 bit. However, as your record, add effects, process and edit your audio and such it does a lot of calculations with your data, as these are done the extra decimals get tossed out and filled in with logical rounded numbers (dithering). This is turn makes it sort of a bastardized 16 bit file.
Starting at a higher resolution will help this from becoming a major issue.
Also, with DVD audio gaining populatarity, audio recording standards are going to be getting much higher resolution, therefore it will be necessary at some point.
Jan 06, 2005 07:37 pm Besides that, the higher quality A/D converters in a real recording card alone will make a huge difference in your music that would be worth the expense.
Why won't M-Audio work in your computer?

Jan 13, 2005 01:45 pm I'm happy with my PCI 0404 EMU, and I hear a lot of cool things about the M-Audion Studiophile. $99 is about the going price - LINK THROUGH HRC TO MUSICIAN'S FRIEND when you decide.... It helps keep dB in beer. Just kidding.
Jan 13, 2005 01:46 pm LOL - only the cheap beer tho...buy more stuff guys, I need better beer.

Jan 14, 2005 10:57 pm Well its time to switch to something smoother, say Jim Beam, or maybe a nice smooth vodka tonic with a twist§

Jan 22, 2005 02:06 pm I´m using Juli@ from Ego Sys for a mouth now and have no complains. It suits me really well.
It´s in the price range of an Audiphile 2496, I guess - although it has some better specs -, has a fancy swapping I/O system, good drivers (The ASIO tends to disapear if I keep the computer on for a long period of time without using the soundcard, don´t know why, but nothing that a good reset don´t solve)...
If not having a huge amount of I/Os is not a problem for you - there is only 4 I/O in fact, 2 of them are digital - it maybe a way to go. :)
