ok i use a adk studio mic around 200$, it goes through a presonus tube pre amp, and i record through a software named cool edit pro 2, and when i record the vocals some words are louder than the other , this is where i put a compressor on (a compressor within the software) , but still it dosent keep the volumes level i tried every type of compression ive been told to use but none of them work for me , and i also have another problem when i do get it kinda close to level , the vocals get distorted when i turn them up loud with a bunch of air sound in the back ground and it just sounds horrible , is it because my mic is too cheap wrong pre amp, is it ok to use a software compressor??

**can any body give me some advice i would really appreciate it**

It's probaby your just not getting the compressor in CEP set right particularly the threshold.

There is no visual indication of when compression is happening with CEP's compressor so if you just use values such as the presets it may not even be working or you may be compressing more than you want to which while lowering the volume of everything you'd still probably hear the louder words. Secondly by default CEP's compressor operate on RMS power and not Peak which is lower than peak. Since your wanting to cut the peaks enable Peak power mode (which is on the 2nd tab). You can leave it on RMS power as well but the threshold will have to lower before it begins compressing.

To get the threshold right look at the wav form in edit view and get an idea of what dB the main part of the vocal is vs the peaks you want to squash and adjust the threshold in that range. Then set the ratio to bring the peaks more inline with the volume you want.

As for the distortion what levels are you recording at? You might also want to cut a little bit of the frequency's in the vocal.

Hope that helps.

Great shout, OldDog! I use CEP2 also, and I have never had any luck with the included compressor. As soon as I went to an outboard compressor I started getting MUCH better results.

Also, make sure that at tracking you are recording the vocals at as level a volume as possible. I tend to swagger and bob when I sing, which makes it hard to get decent levels.

Good luck!

You should try to get the loudest part of the vocals between -6dB - -3dB.

Jim, an outboard compressor is a good investment IMO for vocals, it's next on my list. Vocals are the hardest to control going in and often suffer while you try to watch levels going in. :)

Also I'd really recommend grabbing the AA 1.5 upgrade to anyone who has CEP V 2.x. For $69 it's a huge improvement and leaves open the option for upgrading when a major upgrade is made available.

Ditto on OleDog's comment on upgrading to AA 1.5...

I was a Cool Edit Pro pimp which brought me on Adobe Audition...which in turn has plenty of more features...And my VST's work well in there...
