Hello everyone and a Happy Christmas & New Year to you all...

OK, pleasantries over...now down to business..lol

I have read the FAQs but....

I am researching into the best cost effective way to record my sons bands music to a PC, and need help deciding what gear to get.

We have:
Guitars
Digitech RP50 pedal
DG80 amp (I think thats correct).
A good PC, which will do the job (apart from the soundcard possibly)
We have no mics yet (well, none that are any good).

I was wondering if the pedal can be plugged direct into the PC soundcard*, or if we need a mixer for its preamp (or if it is no use for this purpose).

Normally the recording will be done one track at a time, but the facility to record 3 or 4 together would be nice.

I have read a lot of rave reviews of the V-amp2 pro. Is this any good for my needs? What is everyones opinion about these in the home recording set-up? Does it have preamps, can you record vocals through it? etc

We dont have a large budget, so hence the need to get the best possible gear for reasonable prices.

I'm basically after a decent set up to record to a PC, and dont want to buy unnecessary items, just add-ons to what we have already.

*I am also after a new soundcard, and have been leaning towards the M Audio Audiophile 2496 - comments please!

Thanks,
Mikey

OK...what yer doing is what I started doing 12 months ago...nice one.

What ye can do is use the PC you have (Assuming its quick enough with enough RAM - most do - I have a Celeron 2.2 with 756MB RAM - fine up to 25 tracks!!).

Soundcard - the 2496 is a darn good wee card. I have the Delta 44 which is a good card too and it has the breakout box (a box with 4 ins and 4 outs - all 1/4 inch (gtr lead sized) jacks - fantastic!

My setup for geetars is often this:

GUITAR >> VAMP2 (Not PRo - Just VAMP2) >> DELTA44 >> PC.

Simple and great quality. Add to this some sequencing software (There is free stuff available and Tracktion are offering a FREE Licencese just now - check this forum for the thread) and yer there buddy.

Then, add to this the MULTITUDE of PC based effects including chorus, delay, etc etc etc and even AMP SIMS (Amplitube is commercial and just as good as my VAMP) as well as free ones (again, check this site) and ye are defo there for starting oot.

YEs, I have (Before I got a proper seperate preamp) used my VAMP2 for Vocals (on a clean channel) and it was fine. The Preamps in there arent really meant for vocals but they do a good enough job. A wee mixer for aboot £40 would be ideal for that.

there ye go - a nice setup for minimal cash.

Good luck to ye and happy Xmas...oh aye, and welcome.

Coco.

Thanks for the fast response coco,

My PC is up to the job, no worries.

How do you listen to what you are playing if going through the Vamp? - do you come out of the soundcard to headphones or speakers, or is the Vamp plugged into an amp as well as the PC?

Does anyone know if this can be done using the Digitech PR50?

I have been looking at various Behringer mixers as well as a Vamp2, but am not really sure if its worth going for both if the Vamp can go to the PC and do the job without a mixer.

How many tracks can you record at the same time with a Vamp2?

cheers good buddy

well, that digitech device is essentially the same thing, effects, modellers and all that so yes, it should work just fine.

oh, and I presume you mean the RP50, not PR50...

and welcome to HRC new guy :-)

Thank, yes I did mean the RP50 !

So as it stands could I go -

guitar >> RP50 >> s/card ??

How can I listen to what I'm playing though?

Can I plug the RP50 into an Amp as well as the s/card and hear what is being played ? (cant remember how many outs the RP50 has (I'm at work)

You would have to be sure monitoring is enabled in the software you use, different from software to software, but generally is enabled by default me thinks.

ummmm, yeah, since your sound is heading into the PC...then you hear what you will be/are recording.

Do you know if the RP50 is capable of recording vocals ?? ie does it have a preamp ?
