Will someone clarify?

I am well aware that my ignorance will show greatly in posing this question, but...is an audio interface and a sound card basically the same thing? I am looking to primarily record via midi, so perhaps I don't need an elaborate audio interface? A little clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Well....YES
they are the exact same thing.. kinda
it's just a fancy way of putting it but don't get me wrong you need a proper audio interface
AKA sound card by proper i mean of good quality
not your ordinary card you buy at the computer store but at specialty shops ment for studio needs
Also interface dosn't neccessarly mean a card at all what mean is theres different types of audio interfaces Pci based (internal) wich goes in your pc Then theres umm usb/firwire types that come in a little box including all kinds of in and outs including MIDI and then theres daws/mixers that come with all that good stuff to
i hope this helps
and if your sure your only recording midi then theres i suggest one of the second types was telling you about theres alot out there so just do a bit of research id start at looking at something like the tascam or m-audio site and if you plan on recording vocals at any point ..well thats another post so good luck!

My bad there are like u said more elaborate interfaces that allow you to record all kinds of stuff its just all of the above is a basic rundown There are all levels of interfacing in each catagory ranging from basic to hardcore and every thing between so you should find what your looking for given the info i have provided and if not the info that some of the others will provide you WILL be helpfull good luck again

Well, sound "card" to me implies an internal device, "audio interface" kind of applies more to all sound devices internal and external. But, uh, yeah, same thing.

Thank you Renegade and dB Masters for the explanation. I am going to focus on midi at first, so I suppose whatever audio interface I purchase better have midi i/o. I am still looking to buy a controller. I saw a an Edirol PCR-50 MIDI Keyboard Controller for sale at a local music store for 177.00. (Seems like a good deal)Hopefully I will be able to get everything set up successfully in the next few days. (Waiting for my computer to arrive) Thanks!
