keyboard controller connection

So can I hook up any keyboard (with a MIDI out) to a synth (that obviously has a MIDI in) using a standard MIDI cable, with the result being that the external keyboard automatically "drives" the synth? That is, it tells the synth what notes to play (and how loudly to play the notes if the ext. keyboard is touch sensitive), but the synth still controls the "voice" produced?
