its not going to be bas bad as charley was, here in orlando at least. that storm ripped through here like he wanted to take apart this town. they're still stacking trees by the curb from that one. there's still mountains of debris laying alongside every road--debris which will become missiles when the eye gets here to o-town.

but when it does arrive, i would imagine that the winds will be in the area of 60 mph sustained. charley was 80 with gusts of 110.

the town is completely shut down, even though the prob with this storm will likely be rain rather than wind. 20 inches are possible. everything is boarded up and no one is on the roads (except me, who just went to buy smokes for my work on this new damn song).

i dunno. it was once a category four, hence this evacuation. this is the weirdest thing. charley barged in with no warning and was gone in two hours. this one has been sitting off the coast for many days now and no one knows what to do with themselves.

behind ffrances is IVAN, on the same apparent course. florida is just a target this year.

Now, that sounds way mean!!! Whilst we get horrendous weather over here all year roond - we dont get that!

Still, we do get floods etc and some hefty gales/cold conditions but aye, that sounds bad.

I often wonder tho why folks still live in these places? I know its home etc but doesn't it cost a fortune for the folks who live the areas where tornadoes and storms constantly hit?? I presume insurance over there is expensive!

Anyways, hopefully there will be no fatalities...

there will be a few fatalities, unfortunately. i think there are 3 so far. most of these houses sustain light-to-medium damage, depending on how the trees fall, but mobile homes are always flattened. thats what i dont get: why live in a mobile home in florida? here in the inland, we never get hurricanes. the last one before charley was 1950 something. now there's 2 in 3 weeks. statistical anomaly!

a scottish gale--what are those like exactly?

A Scottish gale is pretty crap to be honest Forty - we have loads ay floods and pleanty snow. Roads are shut off for days further up North and there is always loadsa wind.

In fact, we get it all (sometimes, in one day!). Ive seen lovely sun in the mornin followed by cold, wind then snow at night..its MAD!

Yi'll get big old oaks being blown over, floods in towns etc and roofs being blown off quite frequently. But, there is not the same impact as what you guys get, we just gets LOADS of this type of weather!!!

Still...we do have good water to drink and as much whisky as yi can handle :-p

heh and my parents just returned putting a new roof on my grandmothers house in Fort Myers from Charley...and came back with the grandmother :) They took backroads out of flordia and didn't hit traffic until Georgia. Towns put up signs saying "No Rooms, No Shelters, No Gas" Talk about Southern Hospitality :)

well, it passed to the south of us. some signs and branches down but nothing really major. i listened to old danzig on my headphones in the driveway as the winds came in last night. 'black mass' is definitely hurricane music.

now for hurricane IVAN. is your grandmother returning? maybe all of us should just move out of here for good. lol

Danzig...hey, I used to quite like that dude Forty.

I liked that song "Mother"...simple, rockin and cool. Aye, auld Glen is a good ol rocker for sure. He still doin the same stuff (I dont listen to nearly as much heavier rock these days)...to busy trying to make the darn stuff!!

These hurricanes sound damn awful man...I'll just stay here in the mist, wind and rain and be thankful...

glenn danzig continues to be 'pretty good.' and one of my favorite artists of all time. his last album danzig seven had, i think, two of his best songs ever. this number eight is not so good. his lyrics are getting worse and worse. but he sure can write some catchy tunes. if you liked 'mother' you should check out his followup album, danzig 2: lucifuge. some unbelievable songwriting on that record.

these hurricanes are both awful and exciting AND exhausting. mist and rain rock.

yeah, people are always watching for updates. in the bar last night im drinking and playing pool and every time i look up there's an angry red welt on the tv and people are looking up there. i think it's going to miss the west coast unless it wobbles again. charley was, after all, on a more southerly track than ivan, moving west, and then he did an about face. i want data on those fronts and the bermuda high.

Not to detract for the hurricane talk, but did you guys know Glen was the original front man for the Misfits. They havent been the same since he left. And to beat all, he hates admitting to having even been in that band. I dont uderstand why, people Iknow who dig the Misfits really liked the stuff whe he was int the band.

Anyway the hurrican stuff sucks for sure. Bobtail records lost everything when Charley hit so that sucks.

So forty, how far from the coast are you?

hey noize. i'm just slowly getting into the misfits. i'm not in to punk, but glenn's voice on anything makes me stand up and listen. the reason he won't talk about the misfits as i understand it is that he hates those guys for continuing on with the same name after he left. also, the misfits refused to go into 'the new direction' he wanted to head in, which was darker and more metal. he quit and formed samhain as a way to venture into the territory he had just started expanding the misfits into with thier album 'earth a.d.' i think he closed the door on that period of his life for many reasons, and he seems the type to hold a grudge, for sure. i'm sure there were other reasons, too, i just haven't read too much about it. maybe something with copyrights and money. i think it was a major falling-out.

orlando is about 40 minutes from cocoa beach on the east, and maybe 2 hours from tampa in the west. charley came out of the southwest, so traveled over a couple hundred miles inland, i guess before it hit o-town. before charley i would have assumed that distance was too great for a storm to hold onto its punch.

Ya, the Misfits are not your easy listening type punk band for sure. But Glens voice carried far and above the churning guitars of the time. I liked the early stuff and still like some of the newer stuff, but wont go out of my way to get it. But the early stuff with Glen was and still is very collectable. I have hunted down most of the vinyl and hope to find the last couple this year.

But ya, I know it was not a pleasent break up by any means. From what I know, copyright and money is not the issue, it is more a pride thing. He is now a heavy wieght in the dark metal genre and doesnt want to be associated with the past. And I would agree with the bitter thing as I have read he didnt take well to them not wanting to turn as he considered the Misfits his band.

I know the situation was the same with Black Flag when Henry left, but he still to this day doesnt hold any anmosity toward them and has been back to perform with them on numerous reunions. Even thought the break up was very stormy there as well.

Oh well, some peeps just dont give up.

I agree with ya on the storm going that far inland as well. I would never have thought it could. But then I never thought I would see 37 degree temps in August in Minnessotta either, but I camped in it so I know it can happen now.

yeah i know it's a pride thing. if youve ever read any danzig interviews, he's full of pride and he judges everyone. he always rips on nu-metal (and i'm glad to hear him do so) but what's surprising is that his recent records sound themselves as if he's doing nu-metal. i think maybe he feels threatened by it; thats why he mentions it in nearly every interview. and i think he's appropriating some of the nu-metal sound and trying to danzigize it, trying to take it over from the inside.

noize while you're here can i ask you about insert effects? every time i try running a VST as an insert in cubase it sounds horrible. i've tried a few program demos that way and it seems to me that when i use the effect as a stand-alone (not within cubase) i get the real sound but then when i use it in cubase it sounds too harsh, not as full or real, or just different, depending on what plugin it is.

one thing i notice is that my soundcard meters register the incoming guitar signal as high--the high yellow part of the range. but then when the dry signal is recorded in cubase, the waveform looks miniscule, like it's not peaking. i always have to either boost the track volume until there's no headroom, or else run a limiter on the dry-recorded signal just to get a beefy-looking waveform. but i don't think these plugins are designed to work with limited signals. and they don't sound right with the tiny waveforms when the vst is being used as insert. so i'm at a loss. i really want to get some nice plugins next year sometime, but if i keep having this prob, i dont see the point. i simply don't know how to make inserts sound right! any ideas what i'm doing wrong?

Hey forty, I am not sure what you might be doing wrong, or what might not be working right in cubase. I will fire up soanr tommorrow and see how the meters read. I know when I ran Cubase5.0 I alwasy used the inserts and never had that problem. It sounds like you are setting them up correctly but I will do alittle research and see what I can come up with.

I'll get back to ya tommorrow. Unless Walt sees this and he is the Cubase user that I wish I was. He has a bit more savey with it then I . But either way, you will get an answer.
