On an under $800 budget, what is the best route to go, SIAB, Hard Disk, or ADAT? I don't want to get into computer recording right now so it's not an option. Which is th ebest route to go and what SIAB, mixer/hard disk, mixer/dat, would you recommend considering the above budget?

Sep 01, 2004 09:20 pm why don't you want to get into computer recording?
Sep 01, 2004 10:04 pm Although I know it seems to be the most enabling form of recording, I prefer a very hands on interface and don't need major editing and mastering functions that a computer can offer. Also I would not use the computer I am on now (my only computer) to record as it is not in the same room as my music room.

Sep 02, 2004 10:30 am I've only ever used a 4 track and my computer for recording, so I can't comment on this one. I don't even know what a SIAB is...

Sep 02, 2004 12:46 pm Ah I see. Cool, I'm gonna add that to our glossary
Sep 02, 2004 05:24 pm Oh, in that case the SIAB that I currently use is the Fostex VF-16. The most recent model is the VF-160EX and it sells at Musician's Friend for $799.99. It has a built-in CD burner, effects, etc. It does everything I need it to do. Here it is:

Sep 03, 2004 12:29 pm You have to be very carful with the SIAB stuff... I have a friend who has a VS2400 ...tascam I think...and the users are pissed. There was a heavily advertised optional reverb upgrad... turns out it didn't work and hozed their units... they can't even get the old reverb back. I havn't talked to my friend to see if the problem was fixed but last I talked his unit was unusable already for 3 weeks... with computers you can atleast easilly format and start over :)

Sep 03, 2004 01:08 pm If you are on a strict budget, you can pick up Alesis ADATs cheap. I just got a original ADAT (blackface) for $110 on ebay. If you need more than eight tracks though this might not be the most cost effective option, especially after you add the cost of the mixer. The other problem with ADATs is they are old. Even if you get the machine cheap, you may double your cost paying for the service to get it in running condition, especially ebay units that you can't try before buying. Buyer beware.
SAIB may be the best option given the budget, but all the outboard gear of the other two options will give you the hands on interface and make you feel like some kind of engineering super hero =)
