OK..I have nae rack.
I have virtually no FX or hardware for pc recording other than my preamp, vamp2 and drum machine (noone of which are strictly effects).
I plan on getting a Behringer Compressor possibly and plan on making my own 19" rack.
1. Is there any other piece of hardware anyone considers essential in hardware form and essential for good recordings (in your opinion obviously) which isnt well duplicated by a plug in?
2. How does the ventalation thing work for the rack? I have no rack but if I build one, how will get roond this?
Cheers guys.
Coco.

Aug 15, 2004 06:00 am A power conditioner and a compressor are essential hardware pieces. As far as ventilation goes, most of this stuff is solid state and really doesn't get hot, so it's not really necessary. The one exception is an amplifier...but it sounds like you have self powered monitors, so you won't need one of those for now.
Aug 15, 2004 11:35 am if you have any outboard gear(guitars, vox, synths, etc) i would recommend getting a denoiser from behringer, it really helped eliminate some noise from my chain.
Aug 15, 2004 02:57 pm I think dB is right about the ventilation thing, but I see alot of people leave a single rack space between each piece of gear. That would certainly solve ony ventilation issues Coco.
Aug 15, 2004 03:03 pm Aye..that was ma next question Karen - Can I just stack em up - cheers!
I'm eyein up some Behringer stuff..not to expensive and looks very handy.
Defo a compressor for starters...then movin on!
P.S. Does anyone know of anywhere cheap (in the UK or US if they ship) for rackmount gear??
Ta folks.

Sep 18, 2004 03:13 pm Hey coco,
Got some of my gear off ebay. Behringer is pretty cool. Good gear for the price. Another product similar to Behringer in price is Alto. Heres their website : www.altoproaudio.com/html/start.php
dB is right about stacking the gear together; no harm in it because there's no heat source. Except an Amp, which does heat up. Oh, a compressor is a must have for sure. Hope this helps.
take it easy bro...

Sep 18, 2004 03:15 pm I just realized this post was from last month. Well, it still might help someone else.

Sep 19, 2004 11:31 pm Numeral Uno...Power conditioner! Keep the grounding streight and protect the equipment! As far as ventilation; I stack mine without spaces. Most geer I have and have seen are designed to ventilate well in the space they occupy. I do leave the front and back off my rack during operation. Even some amps and power supplies use X.5 rack space occupency to naturaly create spaces needed for ventilation. You might consider a patch bay. Very handy when you get popping things in and out of the chain during a session.
