Can I use a less expensive laptop for simple recording?

I need to start recording my songs. Most of them are just voice and one or two instruments which can be recorded one at a time. I'd like to be able to edit the tracks and then burn to cd. I'm ok with minidisc quality, but after reading about the problems moving files around, and my desire to do email and word processing in different locations, am considering a laptop.

Most of the online postings about laptop recording recommend new, expensive computers that can handle midi and simultaneous multitracking. I can't help but think that I could accomplish my goals with an older used (and less expensive) laptop. pc or mac would be fine. (at work I have a pc, and my guitarist has a mac)

What's the simplest, cheapest way to do this?

i used a 350mhz pentium 2 for recording for ages, not ideal, but did the job. as long as you got a decent line in and presumaly a cd burner then youre away!

Thanks!what's the minimum gHz, ram memory, whatever, that I would need? would you just use the i/8 inch input? How about software?

Lost for words with all to say.

Minimum mhz? Hmmm, probably around 350mhz like flame uses! :)

The 1/8 input probably won't work too well for you, won't get a good sound. Cheak out the external soundcards in our "The Gear Bag" section. Here's a link:

A simple USB soundcard to use with a laptop should do the job for a one man (here, woman) band.
