Simple Recording

This is probably a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway.

A guy at my church wants to record their meetings they have once a week to his laptop. They will use a lapel mic (I take it they already have it) and the laptop. So, what would you use? I was thinking about an $60 ART preamp and going out from that to the laptop's soundcard (if the card has an "in"). Think that would work or be overkill with the preamp.

I would say its overkill. I think your recording is going to be as good or as bad as the weakest link which will probably be the computer sound card. But maybe the ART will help give a more Godly sound!

a lapel mic may not pick up everyone's conversation. if you need to record a meeting and need everyone's voice to be heard, get a condenser mic and a preamp that will provide phantom power to it. then output from the preamp to the line-in of the laptop.

if you just want the speaker's voice then it should be fine with just the lapel mic going directly into the mic input of the laptop

Since they want to do this frequently, and we all know churches have an unlimited budget (OK, thats a lie, but whatever) They should look into getting one of those flat tabletop conference mics that are made just for that purpose.

Should have noted this. They just want to pick up one person's voice, the woman that's speaking. They want to do it cheap as possible but also something that will just pick it up good enough to put on like a tape. Nothing real fancy.

I'm going to talk to the guy more this Wednesday. I thought just a little tape recorder would be great and they have a duplicator. I'll see what he says about that.
