May 25, 2004 07:43 am jeez, you can buy one for under $20...unless you have access to and the skill to use machines such as a mill and drill press, I am not sure how one could make a shock mount for less than that.

May 25, 2004 09:08 am I don't really understand the purpose of shock mounts. Why not just use normal mic stands?

May 25, 2004 09:12 am They absorb vibration. For example (i think) Lets say you have a real loud bass guitar sound vibrating through the floor, if you dont have a shockmount, it will go up and vibrate your mic adding nasty boomy sounds. If you have a shock mount, that will stop that. at least that was what i was led to believe.

May 25, 2004 09:24 am I guess I could just play quiet. Do you need them for drum overheads and kick drum mics? I don't really see the point of using them for recording voice.
May 25, 2004 09:25 am Thats exactly it, and I love the avatar...wicked looking Beholder...or, they were called a "Beholder" back in the Dungeons and Dragons days anyway...regardless, cool frickin avatar :-)

Obviously you haven't worked with condensors very often...I would never use a condensor in any way without one.

May 25, 2004 09:49 am Yes. My experience with condensors amounts to exaclty two weeks. I guess I will grab some shock mounts. So one never neds a shockmount for a dynamic? (such as akg d112 for kcik drum)
