My terratec 6fire pro sound card has surround sound support. I have all my 5.1 speakers hooked up properly to it, but when I go to play a .wav file or a note on my keyboard, it only plays through 3 speakers (2 satellites and 1 sub). I went into the settings and turned on the 5.1 and it still only played through the 3 speakers. Is the 5.1 only intended for DVD movies? Or can I start producing in 5.1?

May 20, 2004 04:36 am 5.1 is an encoded media type, the decoding of it tells the system which audio to put in which speaker. If it is juts a stereo file it will play as you are hearing it.
Unless the audio or video is encoded into a Dolby digital file type, it won't play in 5.1 with one exception. If you have a multitracking software that supports 5.1 mixing and it supports your sound card, you should be able to work in 5.1 and pan around the stereo field, but, when mixing down to the premaster you would need to encode it.
This encoding is licensed from Dolby and is often times an extra expense with many software apps. I have used Vegas and it's addon encoder and it is really cool.
