I was just curious if this stuff would work. I have no idea what it is called, but its that insulation that almost like a very dense foam. but it comes in sheets instead of rolls cause its stiff. but anyway if you know what im talking about, can i lay this stuff down and layer the top of it with carpet and this actually work as a floating floor, or will I need another layer of wood on top of that, or, will this work at all?

Waa! You are getting serious. Congradulations!
The floating floor concept is primarilary to keep sound out. A lot of subsonics and harmonics traveling via ground up through the floor. The floating floor concept is just that; another layer of flooring with no hard (lumber etc.) connection to the lower floor. The less solid the material between the layers of flooring the better subsonic transmission. Bone conduction stuff. So yes another layer of wood is part of a floating floor. Nothing wrong with using padding in conjunction with carpet to dampen sound however. Just two seperate concepts. Carpet in general is not the best dampening material buy the way. For many frequencies actual concrete block does better. Odd, but true. Wish I could remember where I dug it up but I had a chart off the net at one time that showed a number of different materials and their coeficient of sound absorbtion at different frequencies. Sorry, just can't remember.

I can tell you it's pretty expensive. One of my fellow contractors installed it in a half- million dollar renovation project for a homeowner who wanted to cut down on the amount of noise going thru the floor, but they put hardwood flooring over it which added a bit to the cost. When the project is done I plan to check it out to see its effectiveness.

Indeed, a true floating floor is just that. It is a full sub floor joist's and all suspended on rubber or similar material to de-couple it from the main floor support surface. This does indeed make for a much better sounding room, but it is also very expensive to do.

The material you speak of is a sheet block material used as Walt said to block out sound, or keep it from leaving the room. I use it in the ceiling of my control room.

Auralex makes an item called a U-boat which is basically a rubber support that the florr joist rests in and de-couples it from the main flooring.

Here's a link to a site that helped me when I was building a floating floor with a friend in a studio: www.soundcontrol.com/float1.htm hope this helps. :)
