Not many of us here have had any formal education in music recording, so you may not get the answers you are hoping for. Most of us have masters degrees from the school of hard knocks :-) from learned experience, which in my opinion is the best teacher, though not always the quickest.

My first thought would be to think about whether your son learns in a classroom type setting, this has never been my forte', I perosnally learn best by doing, not being told how. Since you are his dad, I am laying pretty good odds you know him pretty well, and could probably determine that.

Sorry for not having the answers you seek, just a little food for thought.
