Ok, I've another newbie question. If I have a soundcard with 1in 1 out or something and I buy a breakout box with 8 ins and 8 outs is my computer now capable of having 8 individual tracks recorded at once? (Assuming that the Software will allow this) Can I run my Mixer into the Breakout box? Very confused on the subject.

could you tell me which breakout box you are talking about...breakout boxes are made for specific cards, the breakout box will still operate within the limitations of the card itself, if the card only has one audio in, that is all the breakout box will be able to use.

You can't go buy any ol' breakout box and plug it into your card, if you have an M-Audio card, you have to have an M-Audio breakout box, which more often than not comes with the card in the first place, however, M-Audio, unlike any other manufacturer allows you to upgrade your card by just purchasing a bigger breakout box, but you have to buy their breakout box.

Ooh I see, so really all they do is put the Soundcard at an easier place to reach? I was under the impression you could buy a soundcard and seperate break out box. Doesn't matter much now, since I don't have one or anything, and won't be updating my studio for a while, but the more info I can get the better. Sorry if I am appearing to be a leech guys.

No leeching, you need the info, we have it, that's cool, and yes, now you understand, breakout boxes exist for two reasons...to make the stuff easier to get at, or to fit more stuff in it than can fit on the back of a card.
