I was wondering what i can do with my stuff for the best recording sound that i can get, here is a list of my equipment.
1) tascam four track recorder with two inputs
2) a shure sm57
3) two $20 radio shack mics
my band is a four piece. i need help mostly on the drums
is there any thing that i can buy that will make it so i can make three mic cord into one? if you know what i meen? what about EQs? what cheap that i can buy. my band doesn't have much money at all.

Jul 30, 2002 02:49 am Hmmm... honestly, I'd replace those Radio Shack mics, but if you have to use them...
The only way I can think of to get 3 mics to 1 input is a mixer. If your band has a PA system you could use that. You could probably find a cheep 4 chanel mixer in Musicians Friend. Although I don't use it myself, many folks here will defend Beringher to the death. As for your EQ, I'm pretty sure your 4-track has a high and low on each track... and a mixer will have EQ on each chanel... or at least it should.
Another thing to think about... if you have a computer (which I'm asuming you do) you can get started on some decent multi-tracking for very cheep. Goldwave.com makes a multi-track program called Multiquence which you can download for free. The only drawback is you can only save final mixes up to 45 seconds... BUT there is a very easy way around it... download Goldwave as well, and set it to record the stereo out mix, and hit record while playing back your final mix in Multiquence. So there ya go... some free software to get started... and you can do more than 4 tracks, which is always nice... 'cuz bouncing on those 4-tracks can be a pain.
Hope you found some usefull info in there somewhere...

Jul 30, 2002 11:37 pm And you can alway's check out our link's section
www.dbmasters.net/hrc/links.php
as there is a lot of free stuff there also.
Jul 31, 2002 06:01 am Don't worry about EQ's, we usually encourage recording as flat as possible and doing all you EQing in the PC (if that is where you decide to record to)
Also, a very necessary piece of gear is a compressor. I have hard some great sounds come out of $20 RadioShack mics, so as long as you have those, spend your money and things you DON'T have, if you want to replace those mics later, go ahead, but right now, I say make do with what you have and buy stuff you don't.
Jul 31, 2002 10:45 am Ahhh! How could I forget to mention a compressor?!?!

Jul 31, 2002 09:58 pm ya, that's true, I guess that is more to say than for me, I haven't had more than one hour at any given time in the last many months to do ANY work on my own tunes...it is really getting depressing...
