Please help me decide,Maxell XLII-S or TDK SA-X blank cassette's?

I am having a very hard time deciding which tape is the better tape,someone please help me choose one.Which tape sounds best to most folks and which one last's the longest.I am going to buy a bulk amount of one but i can't audition either because no one in my area carrys either..So please help me decide between XLII-S or SA-X..Thanks for any help in advanced..Keith H.

For what it's worth the best tape I came across and used for 4 track & reel-reel 8 track was the Maxell ud XLII. I also used TDK for bit but the Maxell could take more signal before saturation set in.

hey Keith, I know you've posted about this before. Sorry I can't help with tape questions as most everyone here records digitally to hard disk. Those Nakamichi Dragons are expensive! Never even saw one IRL, but I've used other Nakamichi home stereo equipment, like receivers etc. Nice stuff.

What exactly are you recording? just curious -j

Something else to consider is that most pro decks are calibrated for a certain brand/type of tape. It should say in your manual which was used. It doesn't mean you can't use another brand but some tapes will work better than others.

If I were you I would purchase a few different brands and try them before making a bulk purchase. Ampeg, Scotch, Maxell, TDK and maybe Memorex are the ones I'd try.
