Jul 18, 2003 03:22 am any decent preamp (or any pro audio device for that matter) will support a balanced line. A TRS (tip ring sleeve) cable will look just like your TS (tip sleeve) guitar cable, but it'l have three conductors instead of two. Check your manuals for your hardware to see if they support "balanced" lines.
a balanced signal will reduce noise, and is especially important for longer cable runs such as anything over 10'

Jul 18, 2003 04:25 am Thanks Jamie, it's a TF Pro P3 (old Joe Meek VC3Q). I've not got the manual but can download it off the site. I'll have a look. My run is only about a foot.

Jul 18, 2003 04:32 am Have just read that the outputs are balanced low impedance. It says the output is auto balancing and so unbalancing will not affect output level.
Does this mean that noise levels also, would not be reduced by using a balanced cable?

Jul 18, 2003 05:12 am no, it just mean you can use either kind if you'd like. but if you plan on running more then 10 feet or cable you'll notice a difference. also, the quality of the cable is important to. from now on I'm making all of my own cables to ensure top quality, plus i can save a buck or two here and there.
but also check that the recording device you mentioned on the other end has balanced inputs. BOTH devices must accept balanced lines in order for you to take advantage of the technology.

Jul 18, 2003 05:34 am I've run my Bass direct into the recorder on a guitar lead. Always found it quiet. I've lost the manual but i assume this means it accepts unbalanced.
