Right, just getting back into forum/internet and recording after quite a lot of changes over the last couple of years.
Before I got distracted (more about that another time - it was interesting) I was using a PC, REAPER, loops from Beta Monkey and a UX2 TonePort - everything was fine and I was happy with the results.
Has the game moved on significantly in the last couple of years? Is there anything I should really know about? Has anything come out that is really going to change my life?
My basic requirements are to get the same sound recorded that is coming out of my amp/headphones playing back to me without loss of quality and to be able to construct the beats I want.
I still can't bloody sing so not too bothered about vocal processing.

I still use pretty much the same setup you do...Reaper, PC, KB37 (a UX2 with a keyboard controller.
Software has moved forward a bit, drivers have been cleaned up for lower latencies, but no, I haven't seen any real earth shattering developments insofar as the common middle class hobbyist goes, you would be well served kickin back into gear with what you had the!
Dec 19, 2012 03:09 pm Cheers, mate.
When you say drivers have been cleaned up for lower latencies what do you mean? Is this the sort of thing that gets sorted by installing the latest version of Reaper or running Line6 Monkey? Or do you mean a new computer with a more modern sound card?
Dec 19, 2012 03:50 pm Line 6 monkey should probably have some pretty significant updates to your UX drivers considering it's been that long...probably won't make a huge difference, as they are pretty dang good drivers anyway, but always helps to stay current.

I will probably continue to suffer for another couple of months till I get back from Colorado in Feb, then I'll get a new computer and re-install GearBox and Reaper...
Better make sure that I copy all my recording directories into exactly the same place on the new machine too! Has anyone else had problems copying stuff across when they change their computer?

Dec 20, 2012 11:12 pm I've not had any problem with it. I've moved reaper projects between my laptop and my main computer a couple times without any problems. Just have to make sure the reaper RPP project files, and any other stuff (like the wav and reapeak files) are all together, and it should be fine. Wherever you have your reaper projects saved, I'd just copy/backup and move the whole directory in one go.
I try to keep my projects saved in their own dedicated folder/directory, and I try to keep the raws in a separate folder/project from the processed tracks. (in case I ever have to, or decide to start something over from total scratch)
The folders don't necessarily have to be in exactly the same place....(well, maybe the REAPER folder under the username/apps/roaming/ stuff if you have certain skins or settings that you want to keep) You just need to make sure everything is there in the folder when you back it up. Otherwise, as long as you know where your project folders are (I keep mine on the desktop area) it's just a matter of browsing for the project when you open reaper.
Of course, you'll need to re-install any VST stuff you have, and point Reaper to the folder you keep those plug-ins and have it scan for them, but it shouldn't be a big deal. If you have any license keys, you'll want to make a list of those, maybe keep it in a text file, because you'll need to re-enter them on the new machine.
