LOL, oh man, but it's true...

what kind of recorder are you looking for sean? A full-on portable multitracker? i don't know anything about those, but if it's a small portable 2-tracker or digital "sampler" i could highly recommend a minidisc player.

if it's going to be stationary, a computer with lots of RAM and a nice soundcard with be more flexible and save you bundles in the long run.

I have a Fostex vf160. 16 track multitracker. Does what it says on the box and more. It's portable, so you can take it to gigs and record up to 8 tracks simultaneously. They are getting cheaper all the time.

I chose a multitracker cos I sit at a PC all day at work and don't want to spend my evenings recording my music with one!

If you don't need the portability, then a PC would do the job and you are virtualy unlimited in the number of tracks available. However, if you are not very PC literate in general then you will have MUCH to learn and it may be easier to get a multitracker?

of course portability wouldn't be an issue on a laptop

Which computer program are you having issues with? As for portable recorders - I use a Roland VS880 which can record up to 6 inputs at once - you can pick them up on Ebay pretty cheap.

I was looking at a zoom MRs 802, it looks awsome , drum machine, 8 tracks, internal burner. I know zoom is kinda put down for their products but this is almost brand new and I feel it looks good. I was also looking at a fostex vf80 eight track and the Fostex vf160 16 track. Also I was wondering if it is really worth getting an internal burner or should I just use the computer to burn. Any comments?

no reason why you can't mix down to computer and burn from there. then you will get the opportunity to compile your songs and master your CD proper in software :O)

Tho it would be a good idea to get a digital link between the computer and the digital recorder (ie: via S/PDIF) if you intend to transfer your mixes like this.

I have the Fostex vf160 with the installed CD burner. Works really well. No problems.

If you were planning to export the recordings to PC to mix then an inbuilt burner wouldn't realy be that necessary, but they are so cheap now you might as well go for one.

When you say 'It's not working out' on the PC you'd need to give more details. Guys here may be able to sort out why it's not working.

I wouldn't go for an 8 track these days. You will get frustrated with it in no time. I have 16 tracks and find it adequate, though there are a couple of occasions where 24 track would have been nice!

Incidently, the vf160 has 8 extra ghost tracks which you can record to, but not mix from, making 24 recording tracks. This is handy for doing alternative guitar solos for example and then choosing which one you like at mixing stage.

Yahama do a similar unit with a built in drum machine, but I don't know what its like.
