Wow wow wow at Jenny Hallam. I'm an instant fan! That song is pretty perfect. I'm kind of in awe, honestly.

Bobby is also talented, and it sounds good. Everything is super clean, but I can't help but feel the vocals are just a bit too upfront compared to the guitar, but it still sounds excellent. I think it's just a personal taste thing.

Awesome work overall. Of course, that's what I'm expecting out of you these days, ha ha.

I agree with Bobby's vocals, too loud. But man he's talented! Two instruments in one :)

You definitely happened upon two great artists.

Yeah, gotta give a 3rd on the vocals upfrontness, at least listening in the cans anyway....but yeah, great sound overall. Wouldn't touch it cept for nudging the fader a little til they sound a little more balanced or even in level. I wouldn't verb it up or anything.

But yeah, you know what you're doing, so sometimes you just have to use your own judgement, and do what you feel is best for the sound. :) (not saying 2nd opinions don't hurt of course, haha)

My last two mics arrived today, so I'm all set to go with my own venture. I don't expect to get nearly as good and quiet/clean a sound from, but I'll be happy if I can get something good and useable that the talent is also happy with.

I think I'll have a lot to learn/experiment with on that front. :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm glad you're liking them. Here's another we did with Alastair James:

Totally agree on Bobby's vocals, and thanks for bringing it to my attention. Its up now, so I'll hold off fixing it until the buzz has died :-).

Haha! Thanks Coolo :-D

If you like the videos, we've set up a little facebook page here: www.facebook.com/OwnGrown

I'll be uploading a new video of a 2 Indie Rock band today. Really struggling with the mix, but deadline is today. Would be cool to get some feedback.

What are you struggling with?

Hi hat bleed mostly. Its in EVERYTHING, so its made it very hard to balance.

vimeo.com/40769815 - Sounds god awful. I did a rough mix a few days ago that sounded much better, but had no backing vocals. I might just take mix the BV's into the rough mix and re-upload...

This is my first video edit btw! :-)

I don't know if you had a reference track where there was little hats but this mix sounds fine to me. Very wet with the slap-back on the vocals and the verb on the guitar. The hats sit perfectly in that space I think. You may be over-critiquing. Which I'm sure we're all guilty of at some point.

Everything is nice and clear. While there might not be a whole ton of dynamics in the drums as far as snare/kick there is a lot of separation frequency-wise. I can clearly always hear the snare and feel the kick. So I think you've got nothing to worry about.

Not sure if that's what you wanted to hear :P Sounds like good news to me tho.

Thanks guys! Maybe I'm just being a knob... I can hear the vocals hitting the bus compression pretty hard on a couple of lines. Might need to just tweak that. Also, that audio seems to be slightly out of sync...

J Bot, do you mean Buffalo Ink, or the other guys? - itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/buffalo-ink/id477598843 :-).

I'm guessing the other guys hehe. Bobby Good, Alastair James, Gareth Esson, and Jenny Hallam were the ones she liked quite a bit. She wasn't too huge on Buffalo Ink.

Cool man!

Jenny Hallam is here: itunes.apple.com/us/album/25-000-days/id500917615

She's a good friend of mine, and would really appreciate it :-). If you like, I can try and get you a signed copy! (though she's on holiday now, back in May).

I'm hoping to help Bobby with his E.P., and I think Alastair has something bubbling right now... :-).

Oh, and I'm engineering Gareth Esson's debut E.P.. All his songs are amazing. Hope to start pre-production next week.

Hehe, she's not like "OMG need signed copiez!" but she wouldn't say no to one. I think she likes the male vocals more, so I think she'll be looking forward to their releases. :)

She listens to a lot of stuff on hr iPad, often at work when she's on the microscope, or doing more monotonous lab-related tasks, hehe. Sometimes she'll hit her dad's site and load up one of those old public domain radio programs.

(which, for the record is www.oldradioprograms.us) I also put together a "Station ID" for the site last year (also on my soundcloud for posterity heh). There are some seemingly-duplicate files of the programs, but they are actually different broadcasts which were all a little different back in those days.

Hehe. Jenny's album is great! Where does the Wifey work?

This is another recording I did a few weeks ago... Fun song, great band. Definitely worth a listen!

She's a postdoc neuroscience researcher up at the Univ. of Iowa. The research involves facial pain, and is related to migraine research. She's almost done with the postdoc term however, so it is likely we'll be moving next year. She's planning on looking for a research faculty position somewhere that has a neuroscience program. Don't know where yet though, and she hasn't started looking yet, really. It is likely we'll move back towards the southeast. (she dislikes the snow, haha.)

Sounds like you've got a pretty good number of clients moving through that studio. :) FWIW, I think you made the right decision staying on there.
