Live rig...

Well, it looks as though this band of mine is going to haul our fatasses around this crappy scene for a few gigs this spring/summer. Part of me is really looking forward to it, the other part is dreading it... for all the right reasons. However, the 'gear whore' in me is loving it, because I'll need a proper live rig to pull this off. I was considering a new amp from Carvin(2x12 V3), but I'm not sure if I want to spend that kind of scratch... I found a mint Randall 50w tube halfstack for around half the cost of the Carvin rig. Recently retubed, and has new speakers in the 4x12 cab. I've owned a Randall SS amp before, and liked the tone, but hoping a tube version may be a bit more dynamic. I'll be using a Line6 M-13 for effects, both before and after the preamp, with a whawha at the input.

Has anyone here worked with a Randall RH50T before? Does this sound like a decent setup for playing out? Anything I may have overlooked about this rig?

Random thought...get a nice PA and monitor rig and have the guitarists model...a lot of the local bands I see are going in that direction...a couple of the best guitarists I know don't even have a real "amp" perse', they just have a rack that runs straight into the board and thru the monitors...

Sorry, I can't answer anything about that amp specifically...never worked with it.

Right on... s'funny that you mention a modeling rig... it is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. lol I actually own a wonderful Flextone-III that works great, until it's moved and adjusted, then the gain knob likes to 'wander'... not something I care to take to a stage with me, but fine for sitting in the studio. My cowriter will be playing bass through a modeler... works fine... for him. ; p

Perhaps something like a POD XT Live?? I love mine. Very durable for the road. You can bypass the amp modelling aspect and use a real amp with it if so desired.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 'sound' of the Line-6 Vetta-engined products like the XT,X3, Flextones, and of course Vettas... I just don't want to go that route for the stage, this time around.

Any other suggestions for a 2x12, or halfstack configuration, with an FX-loop, in the sub-$500 range could help.

Would prefer tubes, but open to a SS monster if it really kills.

Considering...

`Randall RH50t halfstack.
`Crate BlueVoodoo 120h halfstack
`Peavey Valveking 2x12

Each of these seems to need one mod, or another... seems like an endless process.

EDIT: Now, you two have me rethinking this endeavor...

I wanted to make sure I wasn't prematurely deciding the fate of my beloved Flextone, so I pulled the amp of its nestled possition in the studio, and set it up in the middle of the room...

I chose a channel that wastn't one I normally use, adjusted the gain away from its 'zero' possition, and began to play... for about thirty-seconds until not only did the gain-level begin to bounce around, but everything else on the amp started freaking out too...

I turn the amp off, return the gain-knob back to zero, turn back on, and switch over to my prefered channels, then played for an hour or so without issue...

I guess I have effectively reduced this amp to a four-channel... as long as I can still use the master-volume knob... and no real eq changes need to be made... and...

... if it actually starts freaking out in a live situation, I can go all Pete Townshend on it!!! Boy, won't the guys be surpruised?!
