S/PDIF Help?

I have an m-audio Ultra 8r that I use as my main audio interface - www.m-audio.com/products/...ackUltra8R.html

I also have a Focusrite Voicemaster Platinum that I use as my main pre. Right now, I have my main mic going to the Focusrite, then to the first channel in the M-Audio so that the computer sees it. Probably not the best to have 2 pres in your chain, but I just keep the m-audio as low as possible and too be honest the end sound is pretty good.

When I record bands however, this channel is occupied which limits my inputs to the remaining 7.

I bought a S/PDIF cable yesterday. Would this allow the Focusrite to be its own channel and not occupy Channel 1 of the M-Audio? Meaning, will I now have 9 Ins vs 8?

Never used SPDIF before and not quite sure how it works. Will my computer/DAW automatically recognize it or is there something else I need to do? Thanks for any insight.

SO bad, SO skewed, SO "anti-things-that-aren't-really-bad" that it's probably not even worth discussing.

That said - It says right there on the front panel that it has line-level inputs... If you're using it as a line-level input, you're not going into another preamp...

Assuming S/PDIF out on FVM and S/PDIF in on U8R (and that input is available in the routing table when all the other inputs are active), then yes, it should work.

Figured as much. I will definitely check it tonight and make sure it is line-in. Thanks.
