Mobile Recording Truck

Hey all, I have been thinking about building a mobile recording studio. I have access to a 5 tonne truck which would allow for quite a large mixing room/studio. The idea is that it is easier for me to soundproof a truck like this than it would be to soundproof a studio in my house. The truck would be large enough to incorporate a vocal booth, a second iso booth and a main mixing area. Tracking drums would have to be done elsewhere. I was thinking that I could pickup a AC/DC power supply from a RV shop. This would provide me with power anywhere!

I am looking for any feedback that you guys can provide. I am only in the investigative stage right now and would even scrap the project if it is not doable.

Cheers!

A friend of mine use to own a recording studio here in Philly. After several years of running a very successful studio, he closed the doors, bought a Sprinter Van, and outfitted it with a 32 ch Yamaha 02v96. With a full Radar recording rig, and presonuas digital preamps that he can connect to the truck via cat5.

Now, he is contracted to record live events around the area. And either simulcast the show, or archive it. And according to him, he's making more money this way. And has a lot more free time for his family.

My 2 cents.... Go for it! =)

I have been looking at this for awhile now. The one thing is that I need to outfit a room anyways. Might as well be able to move it as needed.

Here is one example

Looks doable. Might need some extra treatment considering the space, but I wonder how much, Isn't it only about 8 ft wide or so if it's a truck? (I'm thinking semi-tractor trailer, or whatever)

Beyond outfitting the truck, which I think sounds doable if you go over everything carefully, what about securing the truck? After you get it all jazzed up, I guarantee you won't want to find it missing lol.

But yeah, mobile recording rig sounds nice. Wonder how you'd power it all, surely the truck alone can't provide enough juice. Probably need some portable power distribution....maybe an APC unit or two?

Anyway, sounds like a pretty big investment to start a project like that.

I think I would build a room inside the walls of the truck. For power I have a bit of inside help. My dad used to work for the phone company and in these parts there are many substation trailers. These trailers ran on batteries during a power failure. I would get his help in configuring a solution that would give me 2 hours on battery power. For the most part though I would plug into an outlet when parked. One struggle that I can see is ventilation and cooling and doing it quietly. I was thinking that somehow I would like to divide the truck into 2 isolated segments. Possibly using some sort of sliding patio door between the two segments. I'm even considering making one of the areas large enough to handle a drum kit.

The inside dimensions are roughly 24' long x 8' wide x 8' tall. It has an access door on the side.
