How easy is it to make a talkback feature?

I know I've read how to do this somewhere but cant remember for the life of me where. I currently use a Mackie Big Knob basically for its talkback feature only (worth the money itself) but am thinking about selling that and my Tascam 1884 to get a nice digital board. Unfortunately, the ones I can afford dont have a talkback function either.

How do you do it?

What do you need?

How well does it work? Am I better off just keeping the Big Knob and saving up $200 elsewhere? I was also interested in getting rid of the Big Knob b/c I have a feeling it is causing some of the hiss/hmm out of my monitors - would like ot decrease the chain where possible.

Thanks for any help.

At the risk of suggesting an annoying non-answer...I use whatever mic is closest to me in the nearest open input on a regular audio track. I just delete my instructions and/or ramblings at the end of the day.

I have one of those Karma Micros that I put in the last input of my V-studio. Then I route that to a headphone mix (Aux). All you have to do is turn down the input on that channel as to not distract the musio's. I don't print the headphone mix.
