Hi all,

hope you are well and have had a great christmas period!

Ive just bought myself a Macbook pro and am in need of a new audio interface!

I used to use the m audio 1010lt on my pc, but truth be told, ive never used more than two channels at any one time (2 microphones, or 1 mic, 1 guitar)

so i dont really need many channels, i just need it to all link up to my existing gear...here is what i have;

Condensor Mics and Dynamic Mics
Guitars
Midi Keyboard (USB powered)
MP3DJ Mixer (USB powered)
Headphone Distribution amp
Monitors (M1 alesis 520 active) w/XLR connections

i think thats it, i need like 2-4 inputs tops...and am looking for the best quality at cheapest price! any ideas?

Thanking you very much in advance! wishing you all a very happy new years!!!

Luke

Here's a start: USB, probably 200$ though I haven't looked. 2 preamps, MIDI, spdif, 24/96, etc.

I know the UX2 have some great following, but they don't include MIDI.

Hi thanks for the speedy response! Yeah I checked out m audio before a lot of my equipment is m audio so would like to stick with them I think altho not really a necessity. I don't think I need midi anyway as all my devices are USB powered anyway

i will just throw something at ya man, something very important that alot dont consider when getting a mac or an interface to go with the mac.

Direct monitoring.

depending on what DAW you have, alot of times mac wont support direct monitoring! This is really a pain in ones rump as macs dont use ASIO drivers.

I use cubase 4 and an imac with a Tascam us1641 and i cant get it. its really annoying, it means you have to pretty much bounce or freeze any midi youre using so you can run the mac at 128 buffers when you record guitars or vocals. I just spent a whole day trying to get it working right.

When you buy an interface make sure it has direct mon or zero latency in that box so you dont have to try figure all this i just mentioned out the hard way.

Alright, thanks again for the heads up!

If I'm using midi via USB ie my keyboard etc and recording live vocals I need to make sure of direct monitoring for the live instruments the USB midi will be ok anyway wouldnt it?

Cheers

it really comes down to how precise you want things.
Guitar and vocal wise, but more so guitar chops, you will really notice it.

The strange thing is, is you will be playing along say with guitar, you'll hear the latency, so you will speed up slightly to catch up, but in doing so you "are" actually speeding up and you will notice this when you listen back to your track.

From my understanding, you'll hear the latency in the phones because its the last signal coming out, but your instrument will record exactly what yer playing as its the first thing going in.
ie, if you speed up to catch up in the headphones, you are in fact recording the quicker timing, and not what you are hearing in the phones. Its friggin crazy but i its true, i have finally fixed it by being able to lower the latency.
In my experience too, just relying on moving the waveform to match doesnt always work.

This was really driving me mad man hey, ive been writing for a fair while now and havent really looked into that side of it for some time.

I knew it was happening but because i was only writing the songs and not recording i didnt follow it up, and just put it down to dodgey timing.

Even @ 128 buffers i still felt the need to move the waveform ever so slightly.

So as far as your Midi or whatever youre doing is concerend, if you dont have direct mon, then you could possibly have this problem. again it depends on your needs.

FYI, we have a fast track pro (interface that PJK recommended) on an imac at work. It can't do 24 bit with OSX 10.6.4!

I'm very interested in getting the Apogee Duet now that PT9 can use any interface.

i think im going to take the plunge and get hte m audio fast track pro....

i hope this will work ok...looks as though ill need to get some new cables, the mic inputs/guitar inputs are different to my normal XLR plugs..

what sort of plug is that? is that just a 1/4" jack?

my monitors usually have an XLR to XLR cable (m1 alesis 520 pro active), where do this plug into on this unit?

maybe i can get XLR to RCA? i assume the monitor output is RCA....

kindest regards
