Powering Peavey SP4's

I own a mobile DJ business and I was running Peavey DJS4 speakers powered by the Crown XLS802D.

I recently added the new Peavey SP4 speakers and I am wondering if the Crown XLS 802D has enough power to adequately supply the Peavey SP4's.

In looking at the specs, the Crown 802 shows the following;
Stereo, 4 ohms (per ch.) 800W
Stereo, 8 ohms (per ch.) 500W
Bridge-Mono, 8 ohms 1,600W

The Peavey SP4's show
1000 watts continuous
2000 watts program
4000 watts peak

I am pretty new to the live sound industry so I am a little confused. When I brought this up to the guy who was selling the speakers he said that the amp would be okay power the speakers, but it seems to me a more powerful amp might be better suited.

If so, is it possible to purchase a second crown 802 and run one to each speaker?

Any help/advice people could provide would be very helpful. Thanks

Dustin

Hey dustinkrugger. Welcome to the HRC!

Yeah, your pretty light on the power there. I would say that getting a second 802, and running them both in bridge-mono would be the way to go.

When I said I was new to the how electronics portion of live music i wasn't kidding, so I want to make sure I understand how to accomplish adding a second 802 amp, interms of wiring it to the speakers.

I reviewed the 802's manual to learn how to wire things correctly for bridge-mono and I want to make sure i understand it correctly.

1. connect input wiring from mixer to input 1 on 1st 802. Connect a secont input wire from mixer to input 1 on 2nd 802.
2. connect one speaker to 1st 802 across the positive terminals. Do not connect the negatives. Repeat for the second speaker on the 2nd 802. (this means I would not be able to use the speakon connectors on the back of the amps, rather banana clips or hard wiring).

And that's all there is too it?

If so, my next question is that if i wanted to connect my set of Peavey DJS4 peakers using a parallel connection, would i be safe in doing so with that set up? The DJS4 are 500w continous.

Yup! You got it.

You can still use your NL4 speakcon connector. You just need to rewire it.

If you look on the back where the speaker wire comes in, you will see that they are numbered. 1+ and 1-, 2+ and 2-.

You want to move the 1- wire to the 2+ wire. But it needs to be labeled. The end that you modify must be at the amp end every time! And I mean EVERY TIME!!!

And yes, you can connect to your other speakers in parallel with it in bridge-mono. Just don't clip the amp. You can easily damage your other speakers when the amp is in bridge-mono.

I guess I have one more question. I understand the Peavey SP4's are 4ohm, and when they amp is ran in bridge mono it is 8 ohm. Is that going to be an issue or affect performance.

I know i had mentioned earlier running additional speakers parallel; however, this would be on rare occurances. The SP4's will have enough power, especially when powered with the two amps to meet most of my needs.

Just wanted to check before I purhcased another crown 802 amp.

Thanks again, in advance.

The ohm load of the speaker doesn't change by putting the amp in different modes.

The only way to change the ohm load of the speaker, is to change the number of speakers that your running. And also how you put the speakers in the chain.

I understand that the ohm load of the SP4's would not change by putting the amp in a different mode. The SP4's are, according to the spec sheets, 4 ohm. When the crown 802 is ran in bridge-mono mode it puts out 1600W 8 ohm.

I am justing wanting to clarify that this won't be an issue as there are no spec for the crown 802 when ran in bridge mono 4 ohm.

Hope the question is more clear this time.

You can run at 4 ohms in bridge.

The only thing that you might find, is that it may clip rather quickly. Almost as if the amp is running out of gas.

As long as you don't hear distortion coming from your speakers, your fine.
