Cable access

Hi everyone, this is probably a very stupid question but I have always wondered this. When you go to any mid to high level studio there is always a big mixing board which is often built into a desk or pushed right to a wall. How exactly do engineers access things such as the mic inputs and other cable necessities in the back of the unit. There must be an easier way than having to turn the whole unit around every time someone needs to plug something in. Is there some kind of a patchbay for xlr cables where you can plug right into a patchbay in the front of a rack? Thanks.

The few big studios I have been in the desk is in the middle of the room and have cables full accessible.

generally tho, any cables that have to be rerouted from time to time are run in to what is called a "patch bay" and it generally a rack mounted unit that consists only of 1/4" jacks...these have short cables that can route leads from one place to another.
