I have outgrown my current live sound system and am looking to buy a Mackie CFX16 mkII or similar mixer. One thing I want to do is take my Boss BR1600CD along on gigs. I was thinking of using the inserts as a line out to my BR1600 for the voices and guitars and using a subgroup to send the drums to the BR1600. Does this make sense. I understand the inserts are unbalanced, will this present a noise problem

One thing to remember about insert points, is the fact that they are pre gain.

Meaning that you have no control over of the signal going to your recorder.

I believe that there are direct outs on that Mackie. And this would be the better way to go.
