M-audio Axiom 49 problem! ANNOYING!

Hi!
I was a satisfied owner of an Axiom 49 midi keyboard for a coulpe of years.
Not long ago I plugged it into my mac (I only used it on my pc before) and installed the driver etc..
When I plugged it back into my pc it worked for about 5 minutes, then the signal went away. My roommate has one just like it, so I tried his and the same problem happened. I also changed the USB cable, but still no signal.
Anyone who share the same problem or know what might be causing this?

Well, I've not used one myself, so someone else who has one may have to chime in. A few things you might check though: Which DAW are you using, and is the software somehow possibly dropping the connection to the device, or deactivating it? It could be a driver issue, or it could be firmware related as well.

Is it just the midi-signal along the USB that's getting dropped, or is it losing power as well?

If memory serves my own EMU Xboard 61 is picky about which USB slot you plug it into. Something to do with the driver I think. So if you switch slots on it, the driver has trouble seeing the device. Wondering if that might be a possible issue?

It sounds like a driver issue for sure then if your roomates does the same.

I highly suggest heading over to M-Audio's site and grabbing the latest driver download and getting it installed. I am guessing the driver has become corrupted somehow and you simply need to install it over again. But make sure you get the latest version.

Ya, let us know. I can't think of any other problem that might cause that issue, especially with two different units.

Same problem again:/ Latest driver. I also installed windows XP over again. Its really odd, because my USB ports works fine on everything else, such as memory sticks etc.

it says that the driver is not digital signed? May it be this that causes my problem?

All that "digital signing" means is that they didn't pay Microsoft their extortion fees to be "Windows XP approved"...it's bogus and shouldn't matter at all.

ok.
But if its not the driver, and not the Axiom 49, what can cause the problem? :/

Curious, are you letting the USB power the device, or are you plugging it in to a wall socket? If you are letting USB power it, try plugging it in, I have had that do wonders sometimes for USB controllers.

Ah good thought dB. I've not tried mine unplugged and powered via USB but I do know that as dB stated many USB type keyboards have had many issue's with several MoBo's and the like with that issue and using a dedicated PSU fixed the issue.

Had the same problem. However, I have searched around for a bit and came across a suggestion of disabling the power management for USB ports which is apparantly a problem with windows XP. I was slightly sceptical as there appeared to be no pattern with my connection dropping - it could be 30 seconds or 5 minutes from using the keyboard, currently playing it or left inactive. Anyway, it appears to have worked (fingers crossed, I've left my keyboard active for about 20 mins now with no problems so far. I was having problems after max of 5 mins before so I'm hopeful).

To turn off USB power management, go into device manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager).

Now expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section. Select the first instance of 'USB Root Hub'. Right click, choose properties and Power Management. De-select the option giving windows power management control, Click OK. Repeat for all other USB Root options in your device list.

Hope this helps.

Wow, I guess the only thing I have being powered via USB is my UX-2 but it has absolutely no issues and I haven't had to touch the USB power MGMT.

I know my Radium runs without any issues but I do use the power supply with it.

But it sounds like it got your rig up and running so I'm guessing that is gong to be a good thing to know in the future.

Thanx for sharing that so others might get a bit of help from it.
