Check out today's Stupid Deal Of The Day at MusiciansFriend.com. They're selling the MXL 990 for $49.

It's not the world's best mid-diaphragm condensor, but for $50 its worth picking one up if you're in the market for an affordable condensor mic for your home studio.

Awesome! I once got the 990/991 package at the Guitar Center grand opening in Fort Collins for $40...someone stole it from my old practice space. Glad to replace it for a similar price...

Hell yeah. When they did the 'grand opening' of the guitar center near me.(it moved on-half a mile) they did those 990/991 packs for 49$, and we jumped on them to have a couple of each. They are not bad at all, under the right application. I use the 991s(for drum overheads/acoustic guitar) more than the 990s... essentially the same mic with a different capsule. Went uses his 990 extensively for his film-voice-over work.

Since I have such a low-budget studio, the MXL 990 is basically my workhorse mic. It does a fair job on vocals, acoustic guitar, as a room mic for electric guitar (not high enough SPL handling to be close up to a cranked cab), and even for hand percussion. I've used that little mic for just about everything with acceptible results. It's not gonna win any awards, but for $50 you won't be able to find anything better.

Well hopefully somebody sees this today and gets a great price on a good entry-level condensor mic.

And if you don't keep an eye on the SDOTD, sign up for their RSS feed. Every once in a while, there are some sweet deals on a really diverse mix of gear.

@ Hue: How do you situate the 991 for Drum OH's? I'm about to record a local band and I'm curious how a directional mic like that can be used to pick up all the OH stuff going on...
