Ok not really music related but im having some issues with a laptop that just keeps going nuts.

firstly its taking ages to load up IE, but then its not slow once im online.
working with the computer itself though, like going from "my docs" and "my computer" etc it takes forever.

Outlook express is probably the worst, and everytime i go to "create mail", the window for that only opens to about 1/8 of the real size, i have to hit the maximze button everytime.

Outlook express takes the longest to load up at first.

i also now have the problem of the screen being very faded, i cant find where to adjust the brightness at all, ive looked everywhere. anyone know where that would be?

this laptop has a "system tweaker" and "registry clean" program on it too, along with AVG free and i just recently uninstalled spybot search and destroy thinking that could be doing something.

any tips would be appreciated.

After putting these programs on, did you do an update of their pattern list, and run a complete scan?

There's also adaware, which i've cleaned stuff with before. I'm using AVG 8.5 now, which has spamware protection on it.

Kinda sounds like a mal-ware type thing. I've tried fixing my home PC in the past, and ended up reloading it, so don't count that possibility out.

What is the lappy, and how old is it? specs, etc?

On the brightness, it should be the "Fn" key in combination with another to raise/lower brightness. On the other hand, my wifes laptop recently would not get bright no matter what and I had to access the BIOS which let's you set the min/max brightness at the hardware level. If the bios is only set to half bright, then the "Fn" key combo will not go past that.

On minimized windows, I have never understood the magic behind making them do what you want.

You can do it from add/remove programs, should be an option to show/hide MS updates.

I wouldn't use Reg Edit on MS updates unless you know for a fact you know where everything is. Great trouble could ensue. A re-bore, as you say =).

Way cool on the FN up / down. I never knewed that. Just tried on my lappy, and it works! Cool.

I suppose if you're using System Restore you could go back a few restore points. Personally, I turn it off. One time I tried it on my niece's desktop w/ vista, all the restore points failed (like 8 of them i tried out of 20 or so). Plus, I've heard many people turn it off.

You can export all your outlook express settings / mail / contacts, etc. I think you export, tell it what to export, and where, and it's done. Then copy the file to usb, and import them when the new load is done. eezy peezy. Same goes for browser settings. I suppose you wouldn't have to completely woof the drive, just boot to command prompt from CD, remove the windows directory and program files, then re-install. Course, I bet formatting the drive would be more final, but you'd have to back up files elsewhere while the drive is being done.
