Monitor Hookup Question.

Hi everyone, hoping to get some assistance with a pretty newbie question.

I have an alesis io14 and recently got some studio monitors KRKs for the first time. When I plug them into the "outs 1/2" of the alesis they are unresponsive - and from calling tech support etc. I have figured out that the alesis outs are likely defective.

What are the consequences of plugging studio monitors into the headphone outputs? is it a bad idea?

I will likely ditch the alesis unit and go for another brand interface if I can't get my shiny new monitors cranking!

Thanks for your time,

Just to make sure - You *are* actually assigning the outputs to 1&2 and the meters are showing signal?

(and the really stupid question, there's an amplifier in there somewhere either before or built-in to the speakers...?)

i haven't ever used studio monitors before, so I hope I ain't doing something stupid. The output meter levels show signal - the phones 1/2 output audio correctly. In the manual it says you can plug powered monitors directly into the main out 1/2. The 'main level' is at 100%. I tried putting a hifi (amp+speakers) into the main out with no success either.
There isn't really any assigning of outputs as 1&2 are the main (default) outputs, with the phones always doing what 1/2 are doing. There's also spdif but I don't have anything to test that. Whether I'm playing a song in Sonar, or Itunes or Direct monitoring (which bypasses the computer) i can't get any sounds.

I have tested the monitors and cables and they are working correctly.

I went thru it with a dude at Alesis and all he said was "Oh, thats weird! Ok, bye, have fun with that!!"

edit: i should point out he also thought it was broken and not working as it should.

I found someone who wants to purchase the broken unit for $50 dollars, which I may put towards a Lexicon U42s...

does it sound like it is really broken or is there a secret button somewhere? :D Thanks for reading, massive!

You could simply tell Sonar to output the master to 3/4 and try your monitors on that stereo pair.

If 3/4 work and still need to use the phones (since you can't reassign them), create a buss that outputs to 1/2 and do a pre-fader send from each channel (then save it as a template so you don't have to again). If you can send the master to a buss then it would of course be easier than assigning every track, but Audition will not allow me to do that which is probably the norm.

I do this for headphones so I can have two seperate mixes when tracking. If it works there would be no workable difference and you save money.

Hey CptTripps, thanks for stopping by.

So I've given it a go. The soundcard only has 1 pair of hardware stereo outs - which are TRS connections that i've got going into the KRK RP8s. Sonar lets me choose up to 4 stereo bus's for the master out - tried them all and didn't get any response from the monitors. In the alesis hardware monitoring software I can see the 4 outs pairs (1-2, 3-4, etc.) and see the meters going up and down, and I also have the option of changing the headphones to hear these mixes, but still nothing from the monitors on any of them. Hopefully that is what you are suggesting to test - as i said I'm a bit new to this.

I fear that perhaps these tests confirm that the alesis is not working as it is supposed to.

Cheers for the help, buddy

So I just tried reading through the manual but ran out of time. It could be a hardware problem but there were so many config options I never got far enough to see what else might be the problem.

hmmm does the headphone output work?

also try playin' audio with something other than sonar, and see if that works.

but yeah it's lookin' like you have bum outputs if the alesis software has meters bobbin' and still no sound.

Hey whosyourdaddy,

Thanks for helping out, I really appreciate everyone who has come along to offer their suggestions.

Yes, the headphone outs are working, been testing this with itunes, vlc, sonar, ableton live and web stuff.. Always the same result, unfortunately.

I found a guy who is going to buy the broken unit for $50. I'm currently researching a new unit, which I shall post a new topic for. Hope to see you there!
