I need a MIDI keyboard controller, USB, with a built-in audio interface. That can also be used as stand-alone without a computer. Preferably travel size and inexpensive, any suggestions?

Jul 25, 2009 08:43 pm I've always liked the Novation line of controller/interfaces. I plan on getting myself a compact xiosynth for x-mas (if I can ever get one of these jobs and start saving)
The XioSynth and X-Station both have compact versions and audio interfaces. However the XioSynth only has up to a 49-key version. The X-station has a full range of 25, 49 and 61-key varieties.
The Novation keyboards are a bit pricey, depending on the size. The XioSynth is the cheaper version, but it doesn't have the faders and more advanced controls of the X-Station. Both, however, have a built-in hardware synth.
Also, the Line 6 Toneport KB37 (now called Pod Studio KB 37) is a compact audio interface. Link: line6.com/podstudiokb37/
It is about the same price range as the xiosynth (falling between the two), running at about $350 on Zzounds, but does not have a built-in hardware synth (I don't think)
For the Novations:
XioSynth:
www.novationmusic.com/products/midi_controller/xio
The 25-key variety goes for about $300 at zzounds and the 49-key version for about $400
X-Station:
www.novationmusic.com/pro...oller/x_station
The 25-key version starts at about $500 bucks.
I don't think you'll be able to find a keyboard with a built-in interface for less than $300 unless you try to find one used.
Hope that helps.

Sep 13, 2009 12:34 am I know it is a 64 key keyboard but for the price it has the best sound of any of the units under $1000.00. look at the Roland EXR-3 When you play a tenor Sax and put your hand in front of the speaker you can feel the spit from the sax come out. Now that's realism. The Roland EXR-3 Keyboard with Midi uses sampled sound not synthesized. you can get a nice case that will hold the stand too.
