Need a decent microphone for Radio Ads.

Hey guys! I’m trying to find a decent mic to record some radio ads for our company. (Im not trying to start a professional recording studio, I just need a decent mic that will sound good for a simple vocal radio ad) I already have a MacbookPro and Soundtrack Pro 2. I’ve been reading around and have had a hard time figuring out what mic to get. These are what I was thinking of

Samson C01U USB MIC
Seemed pretty decent to me but some people seemed to give USB mic’s crap.

MXL 990
seemed like a decently priced mic. Of course with that I would need a mixer or some sort of direct box that provides phantom power and lets me connect to my computer via USB.. I found this “MXL Mic Mate XLR To USB Inline Preamp and A/D Converter” that should do the trick..

Are either of these a decent mic for recording radio ads? What one would you recommend? Any help would be much appreciated! THANKS!

I guess it depends on how many of these radio ads you're looking at doing.

I've not heard either of these mics but you might aswell get the Samson mic to save yourself the trouble of getting a device with phantom power for it to work, that's if you're not gonna use it again.

The Samson says it only works at 16bit, which is a little crappy but would pass for radio. It won't sound as clear as a Neuman or the like but...people only listen to mp3s now anyway.

An important thing to consider when recording a voice is the sound of the room you're in. You don't have to go crazy with it but just be aware of the fact it may be picked up in the recording. You're best off recording the voice in a dead room (carpets, curtains...) rather than a room with lots of reflective surfaces.

Also if the mic seems a bit dull, try to point it to the roof of your mouth when you speak into it, it should sound a bit brighter. (good one stav)

Hope this helps.

By the way when I was asking that question to myself, I decided to get the Neuman TLM103. So thats that mic that I'd get to obtain a great voice sound capture.

it really depends on the budget. I have not used any usb mic's but iv'e read some bad reviews. I get a small 2 channel interface and a SM7 or RE20 (they are more forgiving on the room and they are used world round as a go to brodcast mic).

The sm7b is a great mic for sure, but its a bit on the pricey side if your on a budget.

I have used my MXL V6m for just about everything. From recording radio ads, to recording acoustic guitars and all types of vocals. Musician's Friend has it with a shock mount for roughly $80.00

If you check out my music posted in my profile, you can hear a track I did using that mic for vocals and acoustic guitars. I also used a Presonus pre-amp with it.

Hope this helps in some form.

Many USB interfaces will come with at least 1 or 2 pre's built in. Starting at that level it's tough to go wrong. If later on you get a nice pre you would like to use, with many interfaces you can plug into the line in on your interface and bypass the built-in pre's.
